Week Eleven - Post Remembrance

Day 48

Indeed, in this post Remembrance week we are travelling down the line through the month of November...and we'll be halfway there midweek.

Today we completed a few more activities around the theme.

Including this anagram of Remembrance Day words.

Lots of students have brought in their own pencil cases for their personal use.

Due to the fact that we are now in rows for a while.

Colourful too!

We completed a crossword from "long a" words.

We reminded ourselves of the "magic e" that converts a short vowel sounding word into a long vowel one.  This proud young lady knows her vowels!

In math we examined expanded notation of two-digit numbers.

Here's a math-a-magician!

We assembled our homework from a previous week.

And placed it on our "Creation" board.

Even though Halloween was a while ago...

...it was still fun to review the experience.

Indeed, loads of tricksters.

And treaters alike!

At home time we gather all of our belongings.

We dress warmly.

For the trip home.

We like to stand with our friends.

Or get a jelly bean for assisting with the clean-up of the room...only sometimes do we actually get the jelly bean!

We adopt lots of animals too!

We're almost out the door.

Sue Milner came by the school today to thank Mr. Hamer and all the staff and students for inviting her in to speak to the assembled group on Remembrance Day.  We also wish to take this time to once again thank Sue and Carol for taking time out of their busy day to visit our school.

Day 49

Tuesday morning in mid November.

The classroom before the students arrive.
There's already work for them to begin once their agendas are written.
Having this work allows the students to take ownership for their learning as Mr. Hamer must walk around to inspect the agendas, a task which takes a bit of time.

On this morning we practised our letter "Hh".

With a lovely mom in to assist as a parent volunteer.

Mom's a natural born teacher!

And the boys and girls respond with delight to the story she reads.

A great tutor as well.

With most of the leaves now off the trees we decided to write our class book on "Autumn" before it was too late.  We had brainstormed some of our favourite things about autumn.

On this morning we decided to let the number cube determine our story.  If we rolled a "1", then we had to print sentence #1.  If we rolled a "2" then sentence #2 it was...and so on.

Therefore, each production would take on a slightly different score.

"Here's my finished page!"

"I hope you like it!"

"I love mine!"

"Do you like my picture?  I do!"

Indeed, autumn is a colourful season.

A great partnership!

One story.

And another!

The dynamic duo!

"I loved drawing my picture!"

"Me too!"

We are team mates!

"Take that picture again, Mr. Hamer...the first time it was too washed out!"

Yes, autumn is cool...literally!

Love that big tree!

Later in the morning, Mr. Hamer put on the classical music.

"We weren't sure if we'd like it, but it was really soothing!"
"We hope Mr. Hamer plays it again sometime!"

We finished up our pages on the review of September.

After we had brainstormed many ideas.

"I was happy that some of my friends were in my same class in September."

"The first day of school sure was fun...as have been all of the other days!"

"Oops...I had better finish my last sentence!"

School is fun.

"I love to work hard."

We learned about place value and expanded notation.

Near the end of the day many of us went on computers.

In teams.

"We'll see you all tomorrow in the same place!"

Mr. Hamer was out this evening and only got to the blog after 10:00 PM.
Looking forward to tomorrow!

Day 50

Well...not too sure if fall came suddenly, but it's here for sure!  In fact, we have lost most of the colours as we await the white stuff for Snoopy to have fun with.

We lined up this morning.

To head over to the learning commons.

For some book exchanging.

And book sharing.

On some nice furniture.

I remember this book when I was a little guy!

Deep into literature.

At the table.

At the other table.

At the big table.

Looks like fun and relaxation to me.

Scooby Doo is a cool read!

Back in class it was on to the chrome books.

For a bit of R&R.

Total concentration.

Team work as well.

Later in the day we hit the SMARTboard.

For a science lesson on Air and Water.

We learned that all living things require both air and water.

We learned about wind.

And seed dispersal.

A classmate was able to get the wind a-blowing.

Where we all were able to observe...

...the effect of the wind.  We also examined the adaptation of seeds for greater movement.

Wow!  The body of an elephant is made up of 70% water!
Humans are 66% water.

Then it was on to a game of concentration.

Where we searched for matches...

...of an object along with its water content.  Too much fun!

Batgirl!

Indeed...a caped crusader.
We did so much more today, but these are the pics Mr. Hamer took!

Have a bat-tastic evening everyone!

Day 51

A rainy day saw the children stay indoors for much of the day.

Today our Grade One pupils were given the wonderful book Good Morning, Canada to keep forever.

At the carpet we were able to read a few pages to the entire class earlier in the week.

Some proud girls.

Some happy boys!

In the gym it was "Beach" volleyball.

Or "beachball" volleyball.

Make sure the ball doesn't bounce on the floor on your side of the court.

Try to make it bounce on your opponent's side.

Defence at the ready.

Let's see how long we can keep the ball in the air.

In French class the children enjoyed a special video en Francais.

Indoor recess saw the chrome books put to good use.

Along with the Flex seating.

Our "My Creation" board changes its appearance a few times each week.

Another indoor recess.

Which Mr. Hamer extended for fun!
Children playing "teacher" and learning how to make paper airplanes.

We are certainly well into Autumn Days!

The students' work is as colourful as the autumn leaves.

Markers are great for the border.

"We love our work!"

"Do you love it too?"

Lots of intelligence abounds.

In Mr. Hamer's classroom.

Our air and water unit is coming along nicely.

See how long you can keep those planes in the air!
Last night, the NAC took precedence over the blog.
Let's see what Friday has in store for the children!

Have a great Friday everyone.

Day 52

Yabba dabba doo!  It's Friday!

Mrs. Hamer recently purchased a device to convert a VHS tape to digital.
This allowed her to make a copy of a television game show Mr. Hamer appeared on back in 1978.

The show was called "The Mad Dash".  Well known Quebec entertainer, Pierre Lalonde, was the host.  Mr. Hamer is not in the above pictures, but he did appear on the show with a friend.  You were allowed to lose one game, but if you lost two, you were eliminated.  We lost our first game due to jitters, but we rallied and won ten games in a row...the maximum you were allowed to win.  Yes, we were the reigning champs!  A fire at CTV's archives in Montreal meant that all 400 shows were lost...except for one episode..the one in which Mr. Hamer appeared!  In this episode, Mr. Hamer played the "game piece" while his partner, Enid, answered the questions.  In subsequent shows, Mr. Hamer handled the questions while Enid was the "game piece".  This went back and forth.  Lots of fun.  Yup, the young lad in the brown and rust clothes is me...Mr. Hamer.  (Because the taping took place on a single Saturday, we were told to bring multiple changes of clothing due to the fact that if we continued to win, our episodes would be viewed over a number of days on television)  We were seen across the country from coast to coast to coast and we won a ton of money and prizes.  The Mad Dash was the first Canadian game show that offered winners more than a Bic Pen and a toaster as a prize!

Check out the link below to watch a very dated game show starring your child's teacher!  You may have to copy and paste the address below into the address bar at the top of your computer page.

Our Creation Board has taken on yet another personality with some great writing about Autumn.

Colourful borders.

Cool drawings.

Brainstormed ideas.

Many kids love to make big piles of leaves.

They love to jump in them as well.

Love the Canadian flag!

A nice apple tree.

Playing with friends is so much fun.

Nice to see some blue skies in Autumn.

The wind blows the leaves from the trees.

Fun picture.

Yes, Autumn "is" amazing!

I love how children draw trees.

They draw them in so many creative ways.

Another Canadian flag.

Lots of fun!

There is lots to be thankful about Autumn.

Nice house!

Going for walks in the fall is lovely.

Yes, Autumn sure is cool!

We also wrote about October.

And Remembrance Day.

With a huge poppy to colour.

Holding a smaller poppy in the center.

We recalled all that we had learned about this special day.

Patterns in math.

Learning about our flag.

You know...it's so much fun being a teacher when you work with such talented people as those assembled here in the front lobby.  This photograph was taken last year on one of our many "Spirit Days".  I hope you and your family enjoy a lovely autumn weekend!
