Day 62

Our classroom is a lit with colour emanating from the corner of the room.

A number of decorations.

Require placement on the the big plant!

"I think I like this red ball with snowmen on it!"

"Hmmm....what to pick....what to pick?"

"I like this little gingerbread person."

"It will like it up here."

"It's fun helping to decorate!"

"This red ball is pretty with all its snowflakes!"

"I think I'll add this one to the tree."

Nicely done.

"Thinking, thinking, thinking!"

"This silver ball is pretty."

"I love the tree."

Before morning recess we visited Miss Mirna's kindergarten class.

Mr. Hamer led the group in song.

Later, we visited our friends in the other Grade Two classes.

Back home in our class we spotted a rainbow of colours.

Resting atop the front shelves.

Each bell plays a different note when we ring it.

Time to learn a song.

And to practise ringing the bells.

Also...time to learn how to hold the bell when it is not our turn to ring it.

It's a little trickier than you think!

We love the Christmas tree in our class!

Before we close off our posting for this evening as we begin to celebrate December we should take a little "look back" on what transpired in the classroom throughout the month of November.

It was the month of the invasion of the animals.

Indoor recess activities produced some interesting creations.

We developed a filing system for our "unfinished" work.

We did experiments around water.

An artist visited and provided a lesson for our Grade Ones.

Their finished product.

Some more indoor recess activity.

Reading is so much fun!

It is also a joy to buddy up with our junior friends.

The fruits of our combined efforts created this lovely mosaic.

November is a time to remember.

Art around Remembrance.

A lovely wreath.

Some colourful poppies.

A medal.

Small poppies for our class wreath.

Bigger poppies in the main foyer.

Numerous wreaths from other classes.

Our guests for our Remembrance Day ceremony.

One of our classmates helped form the hojnour guard for the ceremony.

We learned that Canada is made up of ten provinces and three territories.

A visit to the "model club" at noon time.

We changed up our classroom seating arrangement.

We were shown a variety of strategies to utilize in order to complete a crossword puzzle.

Expanded notation.

A wonderful parent volunteer.

Our "marble jar" grows by a marble a day.

Another class book in progress.

Reading in the learning commons.

Learning more about Air and Water.

With an interactive SMARTboard program.

Our Grade Ones each received a lovely present.

Proud Canadian citizens.

Beachball volleyball!

Dressing for the weather.  Thanks for learning how to do up those zippers, students!

One of Mr. Hamer's electric guitars.

Identifying pattern rules is so much fun!

Still more poppy art around the theme of Remembrance.

Another classroom reconfigure which is fun for the students.

Reading with buddies in the learning commons.

With lots of books to choose from.

Lunchtime cartoons.

Students are always proud to display their efforts.

Our Scholastic Book Fair.

Fun items to choose from.

So many titles!

Loads of fun!

Yes, we read to achieve.

Science is alive in Grade One and Two.

We learned about our Prime Minister.

We also learned how to fill out a multiple choice activity.

Basketball fun in gym.

Indeed, November was a month to remember!
All the best, Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 63

Even though we think mainly about the birth of the Baby Jesus, it's fun to see Santa and one of his reindeer in the blog with that yummy looking gingerbread cookie! Hehehe!

Some more pics from the day before.

As we dressed the Christmas tree.

A proud little elf!

She likes the Santa on a stick.

Looks good right where she placed it!

"I love having a tree in our classroom!" says this young lad.

"Hmmm...this fuzzy ball looks just right!"

"It might make a good hair ornament...no, no, no...it'll go on the tree!"

"There's just so much to choose from!"

"So I'll pick this painted one."

"I'll hang it in a safe place out of reach of little hands."

"Looks great right there!"

So does the little reindeer on a stick.

Hard at work yesterday.

And...hard at work today.

That's a great strategy drawing a line to separate the ones and the tens place as seen in this girl's upper numbers.

"I'm proud of my work."

"But I must remember to place my single digit answers under the ones column.

"Combining math and Christmas is fun!"

"Oops...I forgot to complete one number."

When children finish their work, one of the preferred activities is to open up the chrome books.

There are some great tutorials out there.

"I am drawing a picture as I follow along with an art tutorial."

"Here's what I watched."

"And...here's what I drew."

This little elf is learning how to draw Santa.

"Oh, hi there Mr. Hamer...I was concentrating so hard I didn't even hear you arrive!"

"Do you like my drawing?"
Yes, we all do!

"Here is my "letter Jj" sheet."

"I like to practise my printing."

"I still need to work to stay between the special lines...but I'm trying my best!"

Homework...

...sure is...

...a lot of fun!

The students were given a challenging Christmas wordsearch and this little person finished in no time at all!

Today we began thinking about a Nativity Story that we will work on over the next couple of days.  We will be "imagineering" a present day Nativity.  What if Mary and Joseph had to travel to Ottawa in the year 2017 to have their baby?  Who would take them in?  Which three people would follow a sign?  Where would they find shelter?  What gifts would the Baby Jesus be given?  Check in at a later date to see the finished stories!

Oh yes, moms and dads...save those toilet paper rolls so that we can make a couple of Nutcrackers like the ones shown in these images.

They are simple to make.

And...they look so colourful in a line.  The more rolls you send in, the more Nutcrackers we can make!

We like to improvise in our class.  Our Advent candles are recycled glue sticks.  The flame atop the first candle of Hope is simply a recycled lid from a glue stick.  Yes, we "lit" the first Advent candle.

Here is the new banner in our class.  I must say that I am very proud of the boys and girls in our class.  Today while Mr. Hamer attended the funeral with the school choir for little Hannah Connolly, our children were sent to five different classrooms for Block Two in small groups of four.  Each of the five teachers indicated how well-behaved and respectful the children were.
What a great class we have this school year!
Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 65

Yes, we keep Jesus foremost in our minds as we await in joyful hope for His birth on Christmas Day.  Last night, Mr. Hamer's network internet service provider was down so my apologies for not being able to get the blog posting out as I like to do.

The images for this posting will be from yesterday (Wednesday).  I'll post Thursday's activities on Friday and I'll catch up with Friday on the weekend.

This lovely angel of a student brought in a lovely Christmas angel to place on the tree.

She looks so beautiful!

On Monday, this fellow had many ornaments to decide from.

His contribution helped to fill out the tree even more!

"I like this little snowman!" says this tiny elf in the GAP shirt.

He's happy to keep the other ornaments company.

And...she's happy that he's happy!

"Hmmm...which one wants to go on the tree now?"

"I like this Ottawa Senators ornament a student brought in from last year!"

It sure is happy on the tree as well.

"Too many choices!" she smiles.

But, she chooses one in the end.

The students brainstormed their modern day Nativity story.  Because we had to "squeeze" a lot of information in the limited space, the children dictated their story to Mr. Hamer and their words appeared through Mr. hamer's pencil.  This little girl chose Florida as the sight of the birth of Baby Jesus.  Three wise individuals, a lifeguard, a swimmer and a puppy dog brought Him gifts.  The Baby Jesus received a life jacket, a new swimsuit and a toy bone to play with.

This little girl wanted Baby Jesus to arrive in California at Disneyland.  Mary and Joseph  were guided to the birthplace by large Mickey Mouse ears on a pole high up in the sky. Three wise characters, Minnie Mouse, Goofy and Tweetie Bird brought Jesus gifts of a stuffed bear, a goofy toy and a tweeter that chirps like a bird.  Later, the next day they went for a spin on many of the rides.

This handsome lad saw that Baby Jesus would be born in Ottawa.  There was no room in any of the hotels but they happened to walk by Fun Haven.  The manager invited them in.  Three wise people, the cashier, the owner and the "birthday person" gave Jesus 2017 free passes for Fun Haven, 2017 prizes and 2017 games to play!  Suffice it to say, the newborn Baby would be enjoying the first few months of His life playing all day long!

This young lady discovered that Mary and Joseph arrived in Ottawa at the corner of Bank Street and St. Bernard Street.  They turned the corner and walked toward a school.  There was a park across the street from the school where they found shelter.  Baby Jesus was born in the sandbox there.  Three wise people, a Grade One student, a Grade Two student and their teachers brought gifts for the newborn baby...a Teddy Bear, a pack of markers and a special notebook.

This happy child found Jesus had been born at the airport in Ottawa.  The weather was bad and the hotels were closed so he was born in the airport terminal itself!  Three wise people, a pilot, a stewardess and a traveler brought the baby gifts.  Jesus got a toy airplane, a nice neck pillow to use when you sit on the plane seat and a paper airplane.  He had so much fun entertaining the other stranded passengers in the airport.

Check in tomorrow to hear more Nativity stories from a modern day perspective!

These lads are enjoying the use of the chrome books to once again take some drawing lessons.  Looks like Santa is about to materialize on their pages!

Nice to see classmates sharing resources.

And...share smiles.

Sharing joy.

Sharing lessons.

Sharing a seat.

Sharing responsibility for a wee tiny stuffy!
Have a great evening everyone.
Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 66

Ornaments were the theme for the day on Thursday, December 9th.

Before we get to that, let's check in on the happenings at carpet.
Our little blonde friend standing near Mr. Hamer's guitar is running the calendar lesson on this day.

A couple of little elves have brought their candy canes with them for the lesson.

"Yummy!" says this little guy.  He sends his thanks to our elf volunteer who visited the classroom in the morning for the special red, white and green treat!

Calendar is running smoothly as all hands are on deck!

"I know the answer...I know the answer...I know the answer!"

"I really know the answer!" says the lad with the outstretched arm, hand and fingers!
The question had to do with the date being an even or an odd number, I believe.

Here's a lovely little student with a lovely volunteer!

Nice geodesic decoration there!

Made from Christmas cards.  You can see four more off in the distance.

This fellow wants the puppy dog face as one of his twenty circles that make up the sphere.

A happy girl.

A happy mother and daughter!

"Look!" says mom, "A bracelet!"
Yessirree, learning is so much fun!

Cutting out the circle was one of the many challenging aspects in creating the ornament.

It would appear that our parent volunteer, along with Mr. Hamer, managed to get eight ornaments made in the morning.

Next week, more students will be given the opportunity to make theirs.

Let's see...I see a polar bear and a loon in that ornament.

I see some sparkly cards in this one.

I see Santa's sleigh here.

"Look, Mr. Hamer!  It says - Have a Meowy Christmas!"
Must've been a kitty cat on that card.
I notice a Nativity scene depicted in the panel above the Meowy Christmas.

Some more shots of ornaments, this time taken today (Friday).

No. it's not a dream...the children are in their PJ's.

I see snowflakes on this specimen.

A colourful ornament being held by some colourful PJ's!
(More PJ pics will come on the weekend when I offer Friday's official posting.)

On Thursday it was off to the Learning Commons for the big French Concert.

Mme Medina, Mme Pepe, along with their French colleagues put together the event.

There were two showings, one in Block Two and one in Block Three.

Great to use the big screen in the area.

The image on the laptop.

The image as projected on the screen.

Different grade levels presented over the two blocks.

With different audiences in both.

Some of our class members.

We performed earlier and now we sit and listen to the junior grades.

A fun song, as always.

Oui...Joyeux Noel!

Thank you to our French teachers for working so hard with the children in all of the grades.

Say, let's check in on a few more of our "modern day nativity" stories.

This little girl wrote that Baby Jesus was actually born at St. Bernard Catholic School in Ottawa.  Three wise people, Mr. Hamer, mommy and daddy brought the baby gifts.  Mr. Hamer gave Him some homework, mommy baked some cookies and daddy gave Him some milk.  Later, everyone went across the park to go sliding!

This elf wanted to have Baby Jesus being born in a bowling alley in Ottawa.  It seems that a big lit-up bowling pin guided them to the place of birth.  Three wise people, the shoe lady, the canteen man and the manager gave Him gifts.  Jesus was given a new pair of slippers, a candy bar and a mini bowling ball.  Baby Jesus bowled a strike on His very first try!

Nice effort, I say!

This young lad saw that Baby Jesus was born in his Daycare Centre.  Three wise people, the Daycare lady, a baby and the young lad pictured above gave the newborn baby gifts.  Jesus received a baby toy, a nice meal and a bunch of papers for drawing.  Later on everyone played a game of tag.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteer for the treats for the children.  And...thank you for checking in on the blog.  It is always a pleasure for me to write to you in this format.  Check in again over the weekend to see images from Friday when pyjamas were the order of the day along with a special concert we attended in the gym!
All the best, Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 67

Running a day behind due to the service interruption with my network provider, I'm finally able to catch up with Friday's stories.

Friday was one of our "Spirit Days".

Yup, many of the students wore their pyjamas for PJ Day.

Or, they wore their regular clothes, many of which have designs on them that resemble PJ's!

All colours are represented.

As are a variety of God's creatures.

A Christmas theme.

To go along with another Christmas theme.

Like two peas in a pod!

Some accessories to match.

Indeed, a shining "star" as her PJ's say!

Colourful stripes.

More themed Christmas attire.

More accessories.

At lunch time, our junior monitors arrive.

If we don't watch a cartoon, we play games while we eat.

But, we make sure we've consumed our meal before the bell rings to head outside.

Healthy food, for sure!

"Look what I drew, Mr Hamer!"

A fun classroom.

Our school was so fortunate on Friday to be entertained by the Ottawa Bach Choir.

Who gave a half-hour performance in the gymnasium.
I did not have my camera with me at the time so these shots are taken from the net.

Lisette Canton is their conductor.

She was brilliant in leading a "Q&A" with the school children.

In Block Four our buddies arrived.

With Mr. Papineau.

Lots of luggage to boot as it would be hometime shortly.

After having Mr. Hamer and Mr. Papineau play guitar for "Silent Night" and "Away in a Manger", it was time to colour a stained glass candle.

With fifty students in the one room, space was at a premium and was made available all over the room for them to work.

Anyone need a backpack?

It's fun for me to catch up with former students of mine.

Children were also given the option of using their chrome books to learn how to draw Christmas pictures.

Yup...a jam-packed room!
No room in the inn, I say!

Flex seating makes for creative ideas for work spaces.

Older children kneel beside their younger buddies.

It's nice to see the two age groups work together.

Still more former pupils of mine.

In creative garb.

Total concentration.

It's rewarding to see my former children grow into such caring peers.

"Check out my stained glass candle, Mr. Hamer!"

"You can have it as a gift!"
"Thanks!" says Mr. Hamer.

"Do you like mine?" asks this little elf.

"I do!" replies Mr. Hamer (who is then given it as another gift)

Hustle and bustle everywhere.

Let's check in on some of the work.

Smiles.

A rainbow.

Concerted effort!

Looks great!

A nice guitar.

In the hands of Mr. Papineau.

With an adoring fan!

Let's check in on another of our "Modern" Nativity stories.

This little elf heard that Baby Jesus was born in the big hockey arena where the Ottawa Senators play their NHL games.  Three wise men, Erik Karlsson, Dion Phaneuf and Kyle Turris brought the Baby Jesus gifts.  Erik Karlsson gave Him a hockey stick, Dion Phaneuf gave him a golden puck and Kyle Turris brought him airplane tickets to Nashville where the newborn baby could watch him play for his new team.

Mr. Hamer was thrilled to receive a special gift today from his daughter who works at Rideau Hall.  Our family attended a breakfast there last month with the new Governor General, Julie Payette and employees of the hall along with their family members.

At the breakfast there was a fund-raising auction for local charities and many of the items up for auction were sports jerseys donated by our former GG, His Excellency David Johnston.  Unbeknownst to me, Mrs. Hamer and our daughter put a bid in on this CFL Hamilton Tiger Cats jersey that had been presented to the Governor General at some point over his mandate.  I asked my daughter, "Is there any significance to the number 28?"  "Sure dad," she replied, "Any sports jersey presented to the Governor General will typically have their number on it and the reason David Johnston's number is 28 is because he is the 28th Governor General of Canada."
Indeed, I call this gift an early Christmas present!

Tune in Monday to hear more Nativity stories from the modern era.
Mr. Hamer will be in school Monday afternoon only as he will be playing guitar at yet another funeral, this time for the father of a musician friend.  We will have a "guest teacher" Monday morning.  Have a relaxing rest of the weekend.
Mr. Hamer OCT
