Week Twenty-Six A Scientific Week

The school is excited to begin our annual Lenten Fundraiser.
As we have done for the past ten years or so, we are thrilled to support OK Clean Water once again.

The "O" stands for "Ottawa" and the "K" stands for "Kumbo", the mountainous region in Cameroon, Africa.  Every ten dollars raised buys another pipeline.  The more pipelines we can pay for makes a huge difference as the pipes are used to bring the water down to the villages perched on the mountainside from the fresh water lakes far above the villages.

I am proud to announce that we are also supporting our new Syrian Refugee family that has been sponsored by our church next door.  What a great opportunity for our children to help out both a local and a global cause!

I would encourage your child to assist with some chores around the home in order to let them feel that they have earned the donation they wish to bring in to school.

The fundraiser will last for eight days.  Three winning classes who raise the most on a per/student basis will be given the opportunity to "pie" three male teachers, three female teachers and our administration in front of the entire student body later in May.

Other fun prizes will be given out to all classes as well.

Each 25 cents donated allows your child to place a sticker on the pipeline in the main school hallway.  The sticker represents a "water droplet" for OK Clean Water or a "tear of joy" for bringing a wonderful family to a safe haven.

There is a primary pipeline and a junior one.  There will be a race to see which division in the school reaches the main lobby first from the two ends of the school!  Too much fun!

Day 115

We got right down to work this morning at calendar.

Our calendar teacher has many enthusiastic pupils, for sure!

Friendship.

Teamwork.

Camraderie.

Enjoyment.

Nourishment.

We spent some time placing work in their appropriate folders so Mr. Hamer asked each student to show him their favourite page from their printing folder.

This girl likes her letter "P".

Two lads selected a page here.

Looks like it's the letter "B"...probably because "bear" begins with "B".

She likes this page.

"Q" for Queen!

This lad seems to enjoy...

...all of the letters of the alphabet!

How about this lovely lass?

Looks like "D" tops her list.

This lad likes the letter "A".

For "A" quality work!
Keep a lookout for more examples of favourite letters from other students tomorrow!

We are learning about "Simple Machines" as we prepare for our visit from a scientist this coming Wednesday afternoon.
Have a wonderful evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer, OCT

Day 116

Our school Lenten Fundraiser is well underway.
Today we collected $274.50 toward our two great causes.
The pipeline in the hallway of the school is being filled with water droplets and tears of joy!

A reminder that our Grade Two students have a visiting scientist coming into our class tomorrow afternoon.  Thank you to those parents who indicated that they would be available to help out.  It would be great if you could arrive the school at 12:40 and head out to the classroom where you can meet with me and the scientist to go over what is required of you.
I would like to take this time to thank you for volunteering!

A few more pics from the day before when the students chose their favourite printing page.

"H" is for "Hurray" from this little girl.

"I like my O's, Mr. Hamer."

So does Ollie Otter!

R's are Radical!

Colourful too!

Some "K"ool looking "K"s!

We love flying kites!

Mmmm...for some great looking M's.

Lovely colouring too!

Cool Q's as well.

The queen is the boss!

A photo of a few zebras in the class yesterday.

One of the zebras joins another to choreograph a dance!

"I've finished my Good Samaritan page, Mr. Hamer!"

Very colourful.

"This is one of my favourite class books, Mr. Hamer."

"I like the one about the Good Samaritan!"

Check out my math.

Mine too!

It was nice taking a break from multiplication.

These were easy, but fun.

Looking delightful.

Makes me think of spring on the first day of spring!

We also published our class book on the Winter Olympics.

A sample page.

Computer action.

Ah...I almost won!

Next time!

Keep those donations coming in folks!

Mr. Hamer's envelope.  This is a sample of all the envelopes Mr. Hamer made for all the classroom teachers.

Looking forward to meeting our scientist.

Looking forward to making a difference in the lives of the folks in the Kumbo region of Cameroon.  Have a lovely evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 117

Mr. Hamer was out late last night at a retirement evening for one of the ladies on staff.
Up early this morning posting some pics from Wednesday when our scientist visited the Grade Two class.

Our fundraiser for Lent is running along amazingly well.  Our class has already raised $52.75 toward the two great causes of OK Clean Water and support for our Syrian refugee family.  What a difference the children are making.

The blackboard showcases the money raised today and yesterday.

We also have been taking notes on simple machines over the last few days.

As we prepare for our visit with the scientist.

The internet comes in handy for great visuals.

The boys and girls are learning how simple machines help us in so many ways.

They have a very good understanding that simple machines help make work easier.

One little girl and her notes.

Great drawings!

And..the notes from another little one.

Wonderfully done.

Mr. Hamer demonstrated how the wheel and axle can assist us in moving heavy objects.

A shove on the table top...

Moves the object a short distance.

The same shove on top of some rolling objects...

...moves our object so much further.

And...when we spaced the pencils out like this, all it took was two shoves to make it across the entire table top instead of ten shoves without the aid of the rollers.  Yes the pencils are more like the axle section of the wheel and axle, but they still help to accomplish the work in a much easier fashion...just like how the pyramids were build using the wheel and axle and inclined plane to roll those heavyweight stones up so high for placement.

Here's Mme Pepe along with Scientist Irene.

They are having a short briefing meeting before beginning all of the experiments.

Check in later on to see all of the different centres!  Also, don't forget to keep those donations coming in!  Thank you to our parent volunteers for coming in to assist Scientist Irene.  You'll see them in the later images too!
Have a great day everyone!  Mr. Hamer, OCT

Day 118

We continue with our fundraising efforts today.  Many thanks to all the students who have made a donation, no matter how small or how big.  I am most impressed with the overwhelming response within our classroom and all over the school.  Today alone just over  $121.00 was sent in from our class alone!  Awesome!

As mentioned earlier, here are some more pics from our scientist visit.

The inclined plane centre.

The wheel and axle centre.

The screw centre.

The wedge centre.

The lever centre.

Great parent volunteers.

Scientist Irene.

Fun with the wheel and axle.

Lever action.

The screw.

Fun with wedges.

Inclined plane race.

Some challenging work.

Great listening skills.

Super observational skills as well.

Wow!  What an amazing class!  Thanks for your many contributions everyone.
Have a wonderful evening.  Tune in tomorrow for more pics from our scientist visit.
Mr. Hamer, OCT

Day 119

Wow!  Way to go St. Bernard.  In the first four days of our Lenten Fundraiser our school total is $1605.67 raised!  That's roughly $800.00 for OK Clean Water and the equal amount to the church to help support our Syrian refugee family.  What a great feeling!  There are still four more days to go this week.  A great big "Thank You" to all who have donated!

We'll share a few more pics from our visit with Scientist Irene.

The screw centre was a hit.

With a wonderful parent volunteer helping out.  Thanks Cristiano's dad!

Rapt attention.

The lever centre was also a hit.  Thank you to a mom from Mrs. Miedema's class for helping out.

Sharing ideas at the wheel and axle centre.

And...the screw centre.  Thank you to Nathan's mom for coming in to volunteer.

Scientist Irene ran the inclined plane centre.

Looks like a lot of fun was had there as well!

Thanks to another mom from the other class for coming in to assist.

"I know the answer!"

An aerial view of the room.

Showcasing a ton of learning taking place.

In five well constructed centres.  Hey, there's Mme Pepe!

So cool!

Our Grade Ones worked quietly with the Grade Three class in Mrs. Miedema's room.

The Grade Threes later left to go to another room for a different science lesson.

This provided us with the time to get caught up with the Grade One work.

Learning everywhere!

Working in a group.

As a great team.

Our primary pipe has almost reached the lobby of the school.

Here some of the students are at Mrs. O'Toole's doorway.

They are very busy loading up those pipes with water droplets or tears of joy.

A joyful occasion for sure.

These little ones with Ms. Melissa have been told to start a little farther along the line in order to make room for the students from Mr. Hamer's class you saw perviously.

All the students really had a lot of stickers!

Thanks to those who have donated already.  Here's to next week!

A reminder that next Wednesday, March 28th, our Grade One students will be attending their Field Trip to Proulx Maple and Berry Farms, 1865 O"Toole Rd., Cumberland.  This farm is located past Trim Road  near Innes just east of the suburban Orleans area.

Thanks to the parents who have already volunteered to go on this trip.  It is greatly appreciated.  Parent volunteers can meet the class directly at the farm between 9:45 AM and 10:00 AM or they can come to school in their cars and follow the big yellow school bus!  The bus will depart the school pronto at 9:20 so please be on time.  Parent volunteers will be responsible for a small group of children.  We will depart the farm at 1:20 PM for our afternoon return to the school.  All on the trip are asked to dress appropriately (boots/splash pants/etc.) and bring a lunch.

Also, our Grade One pupils will enjoy a half-day lesson with a visiting scientist sometime after we return from the Easter long weekend.  Looking forward to next week!
Mr. Hamer, OCT
