Week Seven - Mid-October

Day 28

Week Seven finds us well seated in the month of October.

The children really enjoyed their four days off school when they got to share the joys of Thanksgiving with their families.

This young friend attended a birthday party and a wedding ceremony!  That's quite the busy weekend in my books!

A visit to MosaiCanada was a must for this family.  I understand it was the last weekend for this Canada 150 project.

I remember making forts with my twin brother when we were kids!  This little person enjoyed that childhood activity!

It's so special when Grandparents share in the joy of Thanksgiving!

Aunts and Uncles are equally special.  So is a visit to Upper Canada Village!

I love it when parents get involved with the homework in a fun way.  It helps deepen your bond with your child!

Playing with cousins is so much fun as well.

Visiting the cottage is a very special Thanksgiving activity.

Jumping on the trampolines is a super way of burning off those Thanksgiving calories!  Hehehe!

Yes, family is what Thanksgiving is all about.
Check in tomorrow to find out what other classmates did over this special weekend.

When Mr. Hamer and Mrs. Blackmore aren't in their classes, they are found in the learning commons every Monday over the noon hour working with the choir.

We love to sing and learn new material.

This week we are preparing for our Thanksgiving mass this coming Friday.

Mr. Hamer loves when students accompany him while he plays his guitar.

This young choir member plays a mean ukelele!

This young lady is already an accomplished violinist.

And this member of the ensemble sure knows how to tickle the ivories!

Let's see what we are proud of.

"I'm proud of my language arts folder."

"I'm proud of my country!"

"I can sing O Canada."

"I love when we do science experiments."

"I made a lot of accurate predictions."

"I'm a good speller."

"I also enjoy crosswords."

"Do you like my autumn hedgehog?  I certainly do!"

Here's another newly enrolled classmate!

Here's our new song...and we didn't even find time today to sing the second verse!
The tune is to the Twelve Days of Christmas...but here's how the first two verses go.

"On the first night of Halloween my goblin gave to me - an owl in a spooky old tree!"
"On the second night of Halloween my goblin gave to me - two haunted houses and an owl in a spooky old tree!"

Yes the leaves even change colours indoors!
Have a great evening everyone.

Day 29

Yes, our St. Bernard annual Food Drive is underway.  Canned and non-perishable food can be sent in with your child any time of the next two weeks until October 31st.

Thanks to so many families who have been donating nut-free candies for the Halloween Dance.  You still have until the 20th to donate!

As always, we celebrate our seasons and the children certainly are enjoying their time outdoors at recess so far this fall.  Please ensure that you check the weather each day in order to have your son/daughter dressed warm enough.

Like a classmate indicated yesterday, this friend also attended a wedding over the Thanksgiving weekend.  They also found time to play mini-golf!

Two different dinners at two different grandma's homes...now, that's my idea of a great Thanksgiving!

Aunt's can cook a turkey too!

Still more wedding fun!

Playing with my nephew sure was fun.  I must be old now even though I'm in elementary school!

Yesterday we showed a few pics of our new school choir.  They were just hanging out at the time before our rehearsal got underway.  Here is a picture of our choir last year where we performed at a special festival during Education Week.  We also performed at Centrepoint Theatre and at the Ottawa 67's game where we sang the National Anthem.

Speaking of singing...we did that today.

When we visited another kindergarten classroom.

I guess you could call today "Traveling Tuesday!"

Here we are doing some actions to Sambalele.

Even Madame Medina got in on the act.

Too much fun!

Lots of light coming in through the windows.

Today we stood for the national anthem at carpet rather than staying at our desk.
These photos were taken right after we sang.

The children are fabulous singers.

With great enthusiasm.

They also know all of the sign language for the anthem, as mentioned before.

These two pumpkins are unaware of what lurks above them.

What a surprise!

Good buds.

Nice peers.

Cool friends.

Smiles abound.

We care for each other.

We love to work together.

We also love to share our work with you!

Smart students.

In a peaceful classroom.

We're almost there with the hedgehogs!

"I like my orange and yellow leaf!"

"I think my light blue leaf looks cool!"

"I've almost got a full rainbow of leaves!"

"I really like making this craft!"

"I like the greens and yellows in my hedgehog!"

Here's our class hot-air balloon.
Remember, you can enlarge the image by clicking on it.

Another shot taken from a slightly different angle so the glare from the light changes.

Don't forget...Monday, October 23rd is School Photo Day!
Have a great evening everyone...Go Sens Go!

Day 30

Today we headed over to the park for some "R & R".  More on that later.

Mr. Hamer handed out coloured folders for each subject area.

The folders will not be housed in the student desks as we all know what happens to anything after a couple of days in the "cave" known as the inside of the typical school desk!  Hehehe!

Mr. Hamer asked the children to look through their respective folders and select a piece of work they are very proud of.

This young lady loves her music folder.

A close-up of a recent language arts lesson on the "at" family of words.

This young fellow loves to read.

We definitely learn our ABC's in grades one and two.

The smile tells it all!

The prayer we recite each morning can be found in our Religion folder.

This young lass enjoys prayer time.

Yes, we love to colour our work!

This colourful girl is happy when her work appears colourful!

We can combine art with math.

As this young boy has done.

I love ice cream.

So does he!

Some bright math work.

From this bright boy.

Remember when we learned the day on which we were born?

She's proud of her graph!

Spelling is fun.

For this fun speller.

We'll showcase the rest of the class tomorrow.

Then it was off to the park for some sliding fun.

A social climber!

Love the red against the blue sky!  Go Sens Go!

Don't spin too much...you know what might happen!

A soccer fan!

Another sports fan.

A sporty girl!

Another social climber.

Spiderman, Spiderman...does whatever a spider can!

This is so much fun!

Mr. Hamer took way more pictures which he will share in the days to come, but he has to go out with his band tonight...so...have a great evening all!

Day 31

Fall is the season but it sure felt like summer today out on the playground!

It's nice to see some of the pupils bringing in their homework ahead of time.
On a walk in the country this classmate saw squirrels gathering their nuts for the winter.

On the playground, this friend saw trees changing colours and kids with jackets.

This child loves fall because of Thanksgiving.

Halloween and Thanksgiving are two big events in fall.

Fries with ketchup helps to make this child's Thanksgiving extra special!

Just the fact of getting together with family is what makes Thanksgiving so special.

We have now published eight class books.

All about our summer holiday.

Learning all about each other.

Yes, we have been "taking off" in our new grade.

We love our families.

Thank You God for creating everything.

We always remember the great things Terry Fox did.

Learning about the seasons is so much fun!

"One of my favourite acitivities was learning our National Anthem."

"I love my graph about our classmates' favourite season.

"What's you're favourite season?"

"I liked learning about the Garden of Eden."

"I really focused on my colouring!"

"Printing practice is always fun!"

"I love my awesome A's!"

"I love when we learn new songs!"

"I'm proud of my music book."

"I love the sticker Mr. Hamer gave me!"

"I'm pretty proud of my work too!"

"Go Sens Go!"

"Do you like my dinosaur sticker?"

"I certainly do!"

"I also liked learning about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden."

"Religion is a special subject."

Our folders sure look like the colours of the rainbow.

There's a lot of work in that pile!

More pics from yesterday's trip to the park.  Slip-slide-and-away!

Don't spin too much or you'll feel sick!

A thumbs up for a perfect fall morning!

Friendship.

Bonding together.

Short sleeves in late October...imagine that!

Climbing up and sliding down is so much fun!

Tree huggers!

Hippo man!

Love the great outdoors.

This afternoon our grade four friends visited the class.

Mr. Papineau and Mr. Hamer played their guitars.

Then the buddies read a few stories together.

Building community.

Sibling fun!

Reading is a joy!

Collaboration.

"Which book should we read now?"

Total concentration.

Age differences disappear.

Big smiles.

Good reading practice!

Let's do this more often!
Of course, we learned so much more that Mr. Hamer could have posted a hundred pictures!
Have a great evening everyone...hopefully the Sens will win tonight!

Day 32

In Autumn we "Fall in Love With Jesus" and thank God for the beauty of the season.

We did just that today.  We thanked God for this glorious season as we attended our school's belated Thanksgiving Mass at St. Bernard Church.

Three of our musicians who accompanied the choir with our song "He's Got the Whole World In His Hands".  We also sang "Thank You Lord" to the tune of "Edelweiss" as well as a half dozen other songs during the mass.

More homework is trickling in as the week progresses.  Remember, the assignment is due next Monday.  This friend indicated that at recess on the playground in the fall he saw a wasp.  Yes, it is that time of season for sure.

This young lady sat on her front porch where she saw a squirrel collecting acorns.

This lovely young lass saw a house with a cute doggie in the window while she and her family took a walk in the country in the fall season.

This young lad noticed that the trees were losing their leaves when he was outside at recess time on the school playground.

Over the last two weeks Mr. Hamer has read a few books dealing with characters being bullied.  The class discussed strategies to help children when they feel like they are being bullied.

We've been making a class book around the subject.  We brainstormed a few ideas and put them up on the SMARTboard.  Students all wrote the first strategy down.  Then they selected from a number of other strategies.  This student wound notify the yard duty teacher.  They felt that they could ignore the bully and walk away.

This friend would tell the bully to stop and she would even try to make the bully laugh.  That's a pretty interesting strategy I would say!

This friend said that she would make an attempt to stay away from him/her at all times.  Then she also thought about trying to become friends with the bully instead.  Two polar opposite strategies...but both could be equally effective depending on the situation.

Earlier this week we finished our work ahead of the recess bell so we headed outdoors for an "early recess!"  Boy, oh boy...do the students love when those two words come out of the teacher's mouth..."Early Recess!"  Yup, it's almost as exciting as Christmas morning!

Playing in the sandbox is a child's joy!

Hanging out with friends is pretty good too!

A brave young lad in goal.

"We love to play soccer!"

You've got to love this shirt.  "Get over it!"  I'm "over the moon" about this shirt!

Here are a few activities we did over the past week or so.
In Religion we coloured this nice sheet Mr. Hamer made.
We say our morning prayer each day in school.

Another class book we have been working on is this one about ourselves.
Yes, God made us all special!

"I love my family!"

In language we practise our reading with fun activities like this one.  It's great learning for Grade One and superb review for Grade Two.

You've seen images of our visits to Kindergarten.  Yes, we are always "In the Mood" for singing and many other fun activities!

This lad loves to play hockey.

This young lady appreciates that God created her family and herself.

Another appreciative student who loves her family.

We've learned about Bar Graphs in math.
Recently we've investigated pictographs.

In differing formats.

We've also looked into Circle Graphs or Pie Charts.
This activity saw us learning a bit about fractions as well.

When our Grade Four buddy class visited on Thursday, we read many stories.

Later we got out the chrome books for some on-line learning.

It's fun watching the buddies converse.

Offering advice.

Rapt attention.

"Hi Mr. Hamer!"

With 32 Grade Four students and twenty Grade Ones and Twos, many students have two buddies.

It's nice to see them all taking turns.

Older brother - younger brother!

Lots of room to fit everyone.

Lounging and surfing!

Buddy must have gone to the washroom!

Smiles all around.

Concentration abounds.

School is way too much fun.

When I was in Grade One and Two there were no computers...now I'm dating myself.

This weekend Mr. Hamer will be very busy with a model railroad meet.

These seven pictures are taken on Mr. Hamer's model railroad.

It is located in a spare room below an addition on our house.

Each year I invite all the children from the class along with their families to come over for a short visit in the month of June.

The students get to run a train.

Blow the whistle and honk the horn.

Yup, it's great to have hobbies!
In fact, I've had over 2000 people visit my model railroad over the past twenty years.

In fact, Walter Gretzky, Wayne's father came by last October for a visit.
