Week Six - Thankful for Thanksgiving

Day 24

I'll add to the saying on the poster..."May the blessings of this Thanksgiving fill your heart and home throughout the entire year!"

Just before Thanksgiving the girls and boys wrote about the feelings they felt on the morning of their first day of school.  Each student took a turn conferencing with Mr. Hamer. Below is what they wrote.

Some were nervous about where their class would be.

It was nice to know that the children were happy to have Mr. Hamer!

The classroom was prepared so nicely for the students.

Yes, many were curious to learn who their teacher would be.

Many of the youngsters were a tad afraid but they needn't be.

For some pupils, St. Bernard is a new place of learning for them.

Some were happy because they would be able to meet and make new friends.

Some students really missed their friends over the summer and couldn't wait to get back to school to see them.

Some like returning to school because they really like playtime with their friends.

Some had mixed emotions because a best friend wasn't in the class.  By noon hour on the first day new friends were made...one of life's great lessons.

It seems that nervousness over who the teacher will be is a very common concern.

Going to a new grade is a great feeling!

In the end, we are all friends throughout the school.

Chrome books are very enticing to the boys and girls.

I was like this student when I was a young boy...a little bit shy!

The children learned that we'd be filling out our agenda every evening.

Coming from kindergarten up to Grade One can be a daunting experience at first.

It's nice to know that the children find their learning interesting.

Being in a class with fun people is so much fun.  Thank you, boys and girls, for your wonderful comments!

I love the drawings and the colouring the children did on this class book.  I appreciate their many comments.  You, as parents and guardians, have done a great job raising such wonderful children!

Today we visited the white board to practise some of our printing.

Students were able to select one of the first five letters to replicate.

This friend did a great job on her B's!

The she was able to "play teacher" and ask someone else to come forth for another letter.

This little friend is holding on to the easel for greater control of her marker.

Which letter did she pick?

Aha, the letter C.

Next up, a young lad.

 He's proud of his E's.

"I'll try the first letter of the alphabet!"

An "A" for his A!

"Who else wants to come up?"

"My turn!  I'll try the letter D."

This young guy is our calendar person.

Because we've been away from school for the long weekend he had many a number to place on the calendar...lucky lad!

Another healthy treat.

The children had expressed an interest to learn more about Terry Fox.

This morning we read a few pages from the "Value" series of books.  This one entitled The Value of Facing a Challenge is the story of Terry and his life.  We had the opportunity to begin the story.  We will read more tomorrow.  The children listened with great compassion as Mr. Hamer read at carpet.

Have a wonderful evening everyone!

Day 25

Today dawned cool and overcast.  The chill of fall is in the air!  Everyone had better dress warm for the newfound weather conditions.

Important Note
The date of Photo Day has been postponed to a later date due to the fact that a number of teachers will be out of the school this Friday at in-service meetings.

In first block, we enjoyed a catching up period.  Once students had completed a couple of activities, they were offered some chrome book time.  Looks like they were really enjoying themselves!

Computing time is fun!

Relaxing too!

Teamwork and sharing as well.

"I've already showed you one jack o'lantern.  Here's another one."

"Me too!"

Let's check in on some of our homework!
Today we'll look in on the top row, the contributions from the girls!
Remember...you can click on any image to enlarge it and read the pages of the soon-to-be class book.

Say, having the blog is great for parents.  One little friend forgot their homework folder in their desk.  Mom was brilliant!  She found the homework activity on the blog and printed the sheet for her young one to complete!  I love it!  (big smile)

"In winter I like making snowmen with little snowballs but I don't like when I slip and fall on the ice!"

"In fall I'm excited for school to begin so I can meet new friends and learn lots of new things!"

"In spring I like that my birthday is close but I don't like bugs!"

"In spring I like to find worms and celebrate Easter."

"In summer we went camping near the beach."

"In summer I like going to the beach but I don't like getting sunburned!"

"In summer I like to do cartwheels and jump on my trampoline!"

"In fall I like to go trick-or-treating on Halloween!"

"In winter I like to play in the snow and make snow angels."

"In winter it's my birthday in January.  I like to play in the snow."

This morning we started learning about subtracion.

We discovered that we start with the larger number.

Then we count backward to find the difference.

"For 13-9, I start at 13."

"Here I am pointing to the number 13."

Then I count back nine numbers and I learn that the difference is 4."

Mr. Hamer showed us that we really are skip counting backwards.

Yes, 20 - 7 = 13.  Eventually we hope to memorize the differences in our head without having to count backwards.

"I read a story to my classmates today."

It was a story about bullying."

The class learned a number of strategies to help themselves if any of the situations from the story happened to them.

One of our classmate's sister found this beautiful creature on the playground.

The butterfly was later placed in a safe spot.  We hope our winged friend will be okay.  Indeed, God makes such beautiful creations.

Have a wonderful evening!

Day 26

What a lovely fall day we enjoyed nearing the middle of October.

To improve school safety we hold fire drills and lock downs on a regular basis.
We have already rehearsed a fire drill this school year.

This morning we practised a school lock down where the children huddle in a safe place within the classroom as all lights are turned off and the door is locked.  After some ten minutes or so the principal comes around to each classroom with a police officer or one of our resource teachers.  He bangs on the door and asks to be let it.  He shouts, "Is there anybody in there!?"  Of course, the students are trained to remain silent and still.  We are very proud of all the classes in the school as they all followed the standard routine to a "T".  Bravo St. Bernard!

The children cherish the opportunity to read their library books!

Robert Munsch is a favourite.

"Hmmm...I wonder what she's reading?" he thinks.

"Hmmm...now what might he be reading?" she responds in kind.

"I like to stand to read!"

"This book is so cool!"

I like the pictures and the stories in this book.

Reading is as much fun as eating!

Imagine...today is the 26th day of school for the 2017-18 school year!

Mr. Hamer read the class three versions of the Bible Story "The Garden of Eden" with his Bibles for Children.  Then, when we came in from recess time we watched two short kids' cartoons about the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden.

The pictures were very nice.

The story corresponded with what Mr. Hamer read us.

The Garden of Eden must have been the most beautiful garden ever!

Remember the other day when we practised printing our first five letters of the alphabet?

Today we made a pictograph of our favourite of the five letters to print.

It's fun to come up to the blackboard!

The graph develops as each child gets their turn.

The students imagined what the two pupils who were absent today would have picked.
It would seem the letter Aa wins out, but that's okay.  I like printing one of the lesser chosen letters!

The boys and girls continued to work while their peers came up to the board.

We worked with great diligence today so we were treated to an early recess.

Our young friends enjoy heading out to the climbing structure.

Indeed, they are all acrobats!

Standing high and proud.

Relaxing high and proud!

"This is so much fun, Mr. Hamer!"

"Hi there!"

"How do ya like my pose?"

Yesterday we profiled the homework from the girls.
Let's check out the boys' work today.

"In winter Toby the turtle does not like the cold but he enjoys sleeping in the mud at the bottom of the pond."

"In spring I have my birthday."

"In summer I go to the beach."

"In spring I like to blow the dandelions.  I get to play soccer outside."

"In spring I like to go to my grandma's home for a sleepover."

"In winter I like snow and building forts, snowmen and structures."

"In fall it's my birthday and I love Halloween."

"In spring I like getting my bike, truck and scooter out and going for rides."

In spring I play basketball."

"In summer I like to play with my friends over at the park."

This is the class book cover.

Many of the children are completing their little fall hedgehogs.

They are colourful.

Just like the leaves of autumn.

This one is the same one pictured above only with two different leaves in place.

We really enjoy making fun crafts!
Have a great evening to all our families and we'll meet again tomorrow!

Day 27

Yes today is the 27th day of school.  The number 27 is one of Mr. Hamer's favourites because he was born on the 27 day of one of the twelve months of the year.
The number 27 is sometimes referred to as the "trinity of trinities" because 3x3x3=27.
Indeed "three cubed" is 27.
Did you know that if you took all of the digits between the 2 and 7 (the two digits that make up 27) and added them up, their sum would be 27!  Try it...2+3+4+5+6+7=27!  There are many more interesting facts about this number the children can learn when they get up to high school...or by doing a google search!  Hehehe!

Today we visited one of our school's four kindergarten classes to sing.  Did you know the word Kindergarten is a German word meaning "Child's garden"?

The kindergarten educators have the lights turned down as it seems more soothing for the little ones.  We, however, got them ramped up nicely with a test.  Yes, a test!  We told the little three, four and five-year-olds that we would be testing their teacher and early child educator!

"How?" you ask.  Simple...we first sang the Alphabet Song to see if their teacher had taught them their ABC's yet.  Sure enough, they passed with flying colours...in both English and French!

Then we sang the song The Numbers Rumba which quizzed them on their numbers from one to five.
Success....check mark!

We followed up those first two numbers with a selection called Sambalele which evaluates their ability to discern their colours.  Yessirree...they know know their colours as well!

From there we went into On the School Bus.  This is a safety song on how we come to school whether we take the school bus, ride our bikes, walk or are driven by a parent/guardian.

More numbers included Aikendrum where they learn about their bodies, Going to the Zoo where they learn about animals...and themselves through a quirky verse Mr. Hamer wrote.  It was a fun-filled half hour of entertainment and learning...something I would call "Edutainment!"

One little person is celebrating a special day this weekend so we added The Birthday Song to our repertoire once again as we sang a healthy rendition in class.

Our little friend is running calendar at the moment.

With many eager participants.

Later in the day, we combined our learning about hot-air balloons with learning about addition and subtraction.
Hot air rises, cold air falls as it swoops in to take the place of the hot air...that's how wind is created.
Addition is like hot air...you begin with a number and add another number to it with the result being a "higher" number!  Your balloon rises.
Subtraction is like cold air...you begin higher up and work your way down.
Indeed the students enjoy collaborating in groups.

During our later "catching up" period they got back to work.

"A snack helps me think!"

A ruler acts as a number line for assistance as does the name tag.

"A slate and some flex seating allows us to work together as a team."

"We even came up with our own strategy.  We wrote a personalized number line at the very top of our pages.

We love to share our work, our chrome books and our big red chair!

Say, we have a few more pics left over from Thursday's play time outdoors.

We love the climbing structure.

It helps us build muscles.

It helps us play with our friends!

We had fun creating our leaf hedgehog!

We're proud or our work.

Remember our number song sung to the Twelve Days of Christmas called the Twelve Days of School from earlier in September?  Well, we started a new version on Friday the 13th.  You'll see and hear all about it next week!

Speaking of Friday's date, we had a really good discussion about Friday the 13th.

We talked about how nothing crazy really happens on this day.

Mr. Hamer mentioned that he actually likes the number 13.

So we really have nothing to be concerned about when a Friday and a 13 meet up!

Mr. Hamer was at a wedding celebration last night.  That's why the blog is written today on a relaxing Saturday morning.
Have a great weekend everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT
