On Super Bowl Sunday, our choir sang the national anthem at the Ottawa 67's OHL hockey game against the Peterborough Petes.  To view these images in larger format, simply click on the picture.  To return to the default look of the page, click outside the image.

We're down on the ice and about to sing.

One of our class members in the audience.

Lot's of fun in the crowd for sure!
Thanks to this little one's mom for the five images above.

Our school gets a big welcome on the large screen.

Under the stands pre-game.

Where we conducted our warm-up.

Then it's off to the ice.

A little nerves?

Nah...not with this group!

They did a fabulous job!

The Peterborough goalie right beside our carpet.

The visiting team.

From my position down on the ice, I snap a picture of our St. Bernard crowd up in the stands.

They are enjoying the action.

The game proves to be very entertaining.

Some of our students.

The mascot entertains the kids.

Some of our students on the jumbotron.

At breaks between the play, they vie for position.

As they await the cameraman.

We win the game by a score of 5-3.

Today in class we had 25% of the students away sick.
So, we enjoyed some "catching up" time as well as some chrome book time.

This lad is practising his dance moves.

As is this little girl.

This one too.

Once again, some indoor recess time.

Meant for more play.

Well, they worked hard on their lessons.

So why not play hard at recess?

Lots of fun.

A happy lad.

Looks like some Christmas lessons...in February, you ask?

Well, with so many away, it was fun to do an activity that we hadn't found time to complete at Christmas time!  The words on the sheet are missing their vowels.  The students had to locate the word from the blackboard from the picture above this one.

We have some great architects in our midst.

A cage!

A proud programmer.

We also found some time to further organize all of our folders.

With the help of Buster Bear.

This lad was absent on one of the days we conducted measuring, so he found time to complete the activity.

The puzzle was completed.

Another activity completed today.
Check in tomorrow where I will post a review of January's lessons!
Mr. Hamer, OCT

Day 97

Today, February 6th is my eldest daughter's birthday.
This Friday, February 9th is my youngest daughter's birthday.
I guess you could say it is "birthday week" in the Hamer household!
Happy birthday to both of my daughters!

Today we read the story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector, who collected more taxes than he should have.  In robbing the people, we became a rich man but was unliked by all in the community.

The children brainstormed three possible answers to the two incomplete statements above.

They learned that Zacchaeus was the man Jesus wanted to visit for lunch.

While all of the other people in the area were shocked that Jesus would select his home to visit, the boys and girls in class came to the realization that Jesus chose the tax collector as he was the one in greatest need.

Through meeting Jesus, Zacchaeus was a changed man.

He returned all the money he stole and repaid the people four times the amount he had taken.

The boys and girls learned that through Jesus, God shows forgiveness to anyone who truly wishes to repent.

Today the primary teachers met in Block One for professional development.
All of the primary classes visited their junior counterparts to free up the primary teachers for their meeting.

Mr. Papineau read a story about kindness.

The children then worked with their buddy.

Where they completed an acrostic poem.

Around the word "Kindness".

I enjoyed seeing their completed efforts.

It's also fun to see their inventive spelling of larger words.

They did a great job on the assignment.

Colourful lettering.

Colourful background.

A proud student.

I brought a globe into the classroom and we discussed such scientific issues as "day and night", "the seasons", "the equator", "the tropics"...just to name a few items.

Our calendar friend is hard at work.

With his classmates looking on.

At carpet.

The whiteboard comes in handy.

For artistic purposes.

The Month of January in Review

Let's take the time to conduct a "review" of the month of January in our class.
Monty the Monkey chose to set down roots with us.

Different students took turns running the calendar each day.

With their dedicated audience.

A snowflake adorns our banner.

Monty needs a snack every once in a while!

Friends helping friends tuck in their mitts.

Taking a 2D drawing and turning it into a 3D one.

Our friend with his wounded foot.

Yes, we made some promises to ourselves.

Combining geometry and art...

...is so much fun.

We visit the library.

Which we now call the Learning Commons.

The temperatures in January often were so low that we had to stay indoors for recess.

Meaning we could play at carpet.

Working in groups is so rewarding.

Some great creations with the new "Wedgits".

Lots of creativity.

Mr. Nihmey takes his turn teaching the combined group during one of our snow days where so few students were present in each class.  Combining the pupils in their grade levels only made sense so teachers could make best use of their time.

We learned that palindromes are words spelled the same backwards and forwards.

Mr. Hamer kept these fine words up on the blackboard after we had enjoyed a "guest teacher" when Mr. Hamer had to attend a meeting.

Some of our geometric artwork.

Further cool recess creations.

Children chose their favourite page in their Religion folder.

Lovely work indeed.

We made a class book on Family Traditions.

The Three Snow Bears was a fascinating story.

We made another class book about nouns.  This was a homework activity.

You can form numbers in many different ways.

The Lego wall...

...in the Learning Commons.

We discovered that "u" always follows "q" with few exceptions.

We read the story of Noah's Ark and watched a video on the SmartBoard.

Linear measurement was fun.

When we used non-standard units of measure.

Teamwork allows for success.

Sliding is a blast.

As is playing on the snow hills in the junior yard.

Trying to solve the fish finger puzzle...

...also requires teamwork.

Yet another finger puzzle.

Mr. Hamer conferenced with the students to assess their reading abilities.

Scissors were a great unit of measure.

For another math activity.

Measuring buddies.

Another snow day found us in different classes.

Mrs. Johnson helping out.

Can you fill your bucket?

Our Grade Two friends began working in their Reconciliation workbook.

And...proud they are!

Our twelve Grade Two students.

Number families are easy and fun!

A favourite page from our Language folder.

Cool work.

Decomposing numbers in math can be tricky because there are so many ways you can show how to do it.

We listened to the song, "Canada Is".

We also enjoyed heading up to the Smart Board to play teacher.

This young lad likes to play teacher!

We held a "Rules Assembly" to review the rules of outdoor recess now that there is a lot of snow and ice out on the playground.  Indeed, January was a very busy month here in Grade One and Two at St. Bernard Catholic School!
Have a great rest of your evening!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 98

February may very well be the shortest month of the year, but it sure can pack a punch as far as the many and varied activities that take place in its 28 days.

With today being no exception.

The vertical Lego board was paid a visit.

Our students enjoyed working with all the little pieces.

Between reading and creative play, visiting the Learning Commons is so much fun!

Mrs. Avila helps us check in our books.

She also helps us check out others.

We walk around the commons.

To see engaged pupils.

In all facets of learning.

A cool looking device made by a junior student.

Somewhere over the rainbow!

In the pit with a good book to read.

Another brilliant selection.

Yet another!

Team play.

Involves sharing.

A cool crocodile on the carpet.

Fun friends.

Architects in waiting!

Great designers.

Cool creations.

A happy lad.

A contented lad.

Classmates.

We visited Mrs. Bellamy's Grade One class to sing.

Thanks to Mrs. Bellamy for the pics.

An attentive bunch.

Lots of fun tunes as well.

On "Sweater Day" the entire school turned the heat down a few degrees to conserve energy.

All classes were encouraged to head outdoors for a walk in the snow.

Which is exactly what we did.

Visiting the outdoor classroom.

Posing for fun pics.

Then around to the eastern side of the school by the kindergarten classroom windows.

Out front the school.

Another class pose.

Back out to the sidewalk.

As we gather near the memorial tree.

I planted the tall tree in the background over twenty years ago when a young student from "The Zone" passed away.  It was but a sapling at the time.

Out front near the "walkers' gate".

Posing for the picture.

The walk continued into the junior yard.

This is the yard that is actually on the church grounds which we rent for a dollar a year.

A mountain climber.

A cavern dweller.

"Look ma...no mitts!"

Quite the boulder!

A half snow angel.

Peek a boo!

"We're the queens of the castle!"

"Hi Mr. Hamer!"

Another look at our team effort with our buddy class from the day before.

Very colourful.

Lovely word choices.

On the part of this little one.

Rainbow colours.

By this lad and his partner.

Cool embellishments.

From this young lady.

Another rainbow bright!

From this bright child.

Another lovely effort.

With lovely results.

A further look at our Zacchaeus work.

With great answers.

Brainstormed by the class.

A group effort.

With individual touches.

Great job class!

Remember, tomorrow afternoon is our Winter Play Day so dress for the weather!
All the best, Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 99

This February day in Ottawa brought sunny blue skies and perfect temperatures.

In the morning, this little girl sketched the characters from the cover of "Harry the Dirty Dog."

She's a pro!

We've completed our class book on January.

It reviews all of the activities we did throughout the first month of the school year.

It was a busy month for sure.

We now have 31 class books published!

Afternoon came and it was time for our Winter Play Day.

The students met in the gym.

They were placed in their teams.

Teams were named for countries.

Each team consisted of pupils from all grade levels.

Even the kindergarten children participated.

It sure looks busy.

But it is an "organized" busy!

Lots of action.

Our Grade Six students demonstrated leadership in heading up the teams and running the various stations.

Some of our Grade Two's with smiles on their faces.

Bundled up nice and warm.

Two Grade Six friends run the obstacle course.

The teams arrive...

...and get to it!

With assistance from our older friends.

The target throw station.

Students lined up awaiting their turn.

Hmmm...I wonder how this will work?

Ah, yes...I see.

Our Grade Six helpers demonstrate.

Mrs. Farrell with her "February" sunglasses!

Sister act!

A popular station.

Is the Tug of War.

Who will win?

Not this time...but maybe next!

Mr. Hamer has to rush out tonight for a musical evening.
I will show more pics from the various other stations from our annual Winter Play Day when I post tomorrow to the blog!

Thanks to all the teachers who put the time forth in organizing all of the fun!

Remember, tomorrow is 100's Day.  You can bring in a collection of anything to share with the class.  It doesn't have to be 100 items.  This is an optional activity.

Have a great evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 100

It's hard to believe that we have been in school this year for 100 days already!
Time flies when you are having fun!  The students were encouraged to bring in a collection of anything they chose.  They didn't have to bring in 100 items...only a few if they wished.
I will showcase four pupil's collections each day over the next few days.

This year, with so much other fundraising happening at the school, it has been decided that we will not be doing "Lolligrams".  It is my wish that each child in the class bring in Valentine's cards or little treats to share around with their classmates on Valentine's Day.  I will also bring a loot bag of goodies for each of the boys and girls.  It is tricky as Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent occurs on Valentine's Day this year...so we will enjoy the treats first thing in the morning and then we will begin thinking our Lenten thoughts.

This young lady.

Brought in a colourful collection.

And shared her collection with the class.

Some beautiful polished stones.

That tumbler sure worked well.

A proud little girl.

This young lad.

Has a large collection.

Of Pokemon cards.

Which grabbed the attention...

...of his peers in the room.

Lots of fun.

Now here's a big collection.

Of tiny figures.

Which filled...

...two ziploc bags.

Some great explanations.

A quick math lesson on base ten.

A colourful bunch.

Her three favourite figures.

A nice smile.

For the beautiful, blue...

...glass beads.

A close-up view.

A lovely collection.

In Block Three...

...all Grade One and Kindergarten students...

...gathered in the gym...

...where the Grade Ones received Glow Stick bracelets.

Some wore their 100's Day hats.

They danced.

To cool videos.

With partners.

Mrs. Gillam leads the dance.

A happy classmate.

A blurry line.

Hi Mrs. Bellamy!

Our on-line dance teachers.

Some of the 100's Day hats.

Cool dance moves.

Even Super Mario got in on the act.

Arms up, then bend down...

Pretty in pink.

Sister Act!

A creative combination of Glow Sticks.

Mr. Hamer enjoyed lunch recess duty on the Junior Yard.

With its mountain range!

Indeed, it was a happy Hundreds Day at school.
Check in next week to see more of our amazing collections, some more of our stations from our Winter Play Day and please try not to forget about our upcoming Valentine's Day!
Have a wonderful weekend.  Mr. Hamer OCT
