As the topmost picture indicates, tomorrow is "Shrove Tuesday" aka "Pancake Tuesday" aka "Mardi Gras".  Yes, we will be serving the boys and girls pancakes in school tomorrow morning, the day before Lent begins with Ash Wednesday.

With this week also being "Valentine's" week, our homework reflects the caring we must do for each other every moment of our lives.

The children are asked to work with mom and dad to come up with a subject who does something beautiful.

Check out these examples.  The children can draw the subject and the object or they can find a picture to paste just as Miss Cindy did a number of years ago.

Just a reminder to print the subject on the upper line and the object on the lower lines.
My examples in my newsletter were...

Somewhere today...a mother...hugs her daughter
Somewhere today...a teacher...sings a song for his students
Somewhere today...a baby...speaks his first word
Somewhere today...a puppy dog...wags his tail in excitement.

Have fun coming up with your own creative "Somewhere Today".

Mr. Hamer has to remove all of the marbles (yes, he is losing his marbles) from our marble jar as we have reached 100 days of school.  Today was Day 101.

The grade two children...

...who will be receiving...

...the sacrament...

...of First Communion...

...received their special First Eucharist books...

...which they can read at home with their mom and dad.

A joyous group, for sure!

The children always have some creative things to share with Mr. Hamer.

Including this young lady!

Let's check in on our 100's Day presentations.

A trio of trinkets...

...captured this young lad's imagination.

He would like to thank a friend for loaning him the toys.

These presentations spur on some interesting discussions.

This happy lass...

...also has a few trinkets to share.

Some interesting figurines.

In a number of colours.

Along with accessories.

This happy lad...

...brought two draw-string bags.

With interesting contents.

Let's check in and see...

...what the bags will produce.

An eager audience.

Aha!  A group of colourful minerals.

With some marbles.

Did Mr. Hamer say that he had lost his marbles earlier! (big grin)

Well, just maybe we have found them.

A smily friend.

With her Pokemon card collection.

In a cool looking binder.

With a very cool looking cover.

Grabs the attention of the audience.

So many favourites!

"Which one do you like?"

A few more pics from our snow day.

With more stations to check in on.

This looks to me like a "trying to keep warm" station!

On this crisp blue-sky day.

Ooh, la, la...a bucket race.

Fill the bucket with snow.

Then take a run for it!
Tomorrow evening Mr. Hamer is out at a dinner function at St. Anthony's Soccer Club, so images will be posted later in the evening or the following day.
Have a great "Olympic" evening!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 102

This week we are running a day behind.

Today is Wednesday but I am sharing pics from Tuesday.

And Shrove Tuesday it was!

AKA "Pancake Tuesday".

The children enjoyed the great pancakes...

...that the parent volunteers had come in early to make.

Yum, yum!

We checked in on some of the winter Olympic sports.

Where we discovered a bobsled team from Nigeria!
Our little Nigerian girl in the class was truly excited!

Our classes were entertained...

...in the gym...

...by a percussion duo...

...with beautiful instruments...

...in many colours and sizes...

Amassing in the gymnasium.

The duo speaks French to the boys and girls.

Highly creative.

Highly entertaining.

Teachers and students.

Some from our class with their buddies.

Our latest flex seating stools.

Are enjoyed by many.

Later in the day we created a class book page.

Around Shrove Tuesday.

As a class...

...we brainstormed two great answers...

...for the two unfinished sentences...

 ...on the sheet...

Looking this way!

And that!

Beautiful work from everyone.

And...everyone is willing to share!

Of course, all of the responses will be identical.

As this was a class effort.

Many colour selections.

Lots of proud pupils.

Colourful lettering.

Too much fun!

Like that orange and green.

The pancakes were yummy.

We learned that on Shrove Tuesday we open the cupboards...

...and clean out the yummy treats...

...as we begin to sacrifice a little bit for Lent.

Just as Jesus did for 40 days in the desert.

But...

We also learned...

...that while we give up something...

...we can also pay it forward...

...by doing extra things...

...to help our family and friends...

...to make our personal lives so much better.

..
This young lad with his creation tells us to enjoy a wonderful evening.
Check in tomorrow where we will see pics from our Valentine's Day celebrations.
More images from 100's Day and our Winter Play Day will be showcased later this week as well!  Thanks so much for checking in!  Mr. Hamer  OCT

Day 103

It's that time of the year!

This form came home tonight with your child's report card.  Mr. Hamer does not have to meet with all parents.  I sent you a note indicating whether or not I wanted to hold a meeting with you on this sheet.  To book a time, visit the site below by copying and pasting the link into your address bar at the top of your page:

Again, we are catching up this week as Mr. Hamer was out Tuesday evening.  Therefore, tonight you will read about yesterday's activities.  Two of our boys carried in the Alleluia banner at our assembly when it was "buried" for the remainder of Lent.  Yes, we will not sing the Alleluia until Easter.

The choir did a fabulous job singing four songs during our Ash Wednesday Liturgy.
They sang "Come Into My Heart", "Praise to You, Lord", "Ashes" and "Dona Nobis Pacem".

Following the liturgy, it was back to class.

A Valentine's Party was held.

I spoke to the children that typically we would have held the Ash Wednesday liturgy following the party.

But we forgive ourselves for celebrating Valentine's for the brief moment we did.

There was tremendous joy abounding in the room.

With lots of treats.

Much sharing.

Lots of examining.

Loads of loot!

A ton of smiles.

Cool cards.

Happy campers.

Eagerness.

Balloon blowing.

Sorting of treats.

So much fun.

So engaging.

A really cool Valentine card from a classmate.

What a great idea!

A Redblacks fan...after my heart!

Speaking of heart...check out the cool fleece!

Walking around.

Gathering in groups.

Posing for pics.

Playing "Keep the Balloon Off the Floor!"

Creative drawing.

A look from the teacher's desk.

Wow!  A heart shaped sandwich for lunch!  So-o-o creative!

And...a heart made by hands.

Celebrating!

Love the look!

Lookee here!

A fun fort for a work space.

Team work.

Sharing a table.

Visiting friends.

Hugs.

And...still more hugs.  Check in tomorrow for more pics from our 100's Day sharing and even more from our Winter Play Day the week before!  Yikes!
All the best, Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 104

Yes, Olympic fever is hitting Canada.

A former student of Mr. Hamer's won gold this past week in PyeongChang.
Mr. Hamer taught John Morris when John was a Grade Six student way back in 1988-89.
John attended Elmridge Catholic School, now called St. Brother Andre in what was then known as the Gloucester area of Ottawa.  This image shows John with his curling partner, Kaitlyn Lawes on the podium at the Winter Games.  John also won an Olympic gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.

Speaking of curling.

Curling was one of the stations...

...during our Winter Play Day last week.

Lots of rings in the house.

An action shot.

You have to wait your turn.

Too much fun!

We thank our Grade Six helpers.

Back outside...

...another station was...

...snowball toss!

One of our students in action.

For 100's Day...

...this little girl brought in over 100 beads!

She was excited to talk about them.

In front of her peers.

Lots of rapt attention.

In the shape of a heart.

A lovely Valentine.

Her three favourite beads.

Ah...yes...

...something else to show.

What does this little guy have?

He has a lot of keen listeners.

With many cool items!

This girl...

...loves her special Pokemon card.

This young lad...

...has a great smile for the minerals he has brought in.

A galena crystal.

From another view.

Very interesting minerals, for sure!

On Thursday morning, Mr. Hamer had to take the grade twos from another class.

They worked quietly while Mr. Hamer went ahead and taught his own students.

The beginnings of multiplication.  Everyone got these answers correct...even Goofy!

Indoor recess due to an icy playground brought the chrome books out.

With lots of cool applications for learning.

The modelling club set up in the Learning Commons...

...along with the art club.

Lots of great model work.

And...

...lots of great artwork!

Socializing as well.

"Don't cut your tie, there...Mr. Papineau!"

Boys at work.

Producing artworks.

A fun-filled Learning Commons.

In Block Four, it was off to Mrs. Akle's Grade One class.

To sing with Mr. Guitar!

Our Grade Two field trip is this coming Wednesday. Here is the note I will give out on Tuesday for our parent volunteers.  Click on the image to enlarge it.
I will post Friday's activities later on this weekend.  We only had 12 of 20 students in school Friday....yikes!  Have a great family weekend all!  Mr. Hamer  OCT

Day 105

Friday was Crazy Hair Day.

Or...Crazy Hat Day...your preference!

Mrs. O'Toole in the staff room.

Mrs. R. as well.

With Mrs. Blackmore peeking in!

Some of our Grade Six friends in the hall.

Students out on the playground.

Then in class.

With bows.

And braids.

Beautifully done!

Colouring too.

With a bandana.

Love the hair style!

Hats help.

Yes they do!

How about headphones and glasses amiss.

Still more different hairstyles.

Monty loves his new hat.

"I can concentrate better wearing this, Mr. Hamer!" announces this young lad.

Still more layers!

You've got great assistants Monty!

Too cute!

Another style.

Yet another!

Hi Mrs. Eaton!

A choir member.

Two lads...or are they?

We visited Mrs. Eaton's class to learn more about Reconciliation.

With all of the Grade Two's.

A fun bunch!

With yet more hairstyles.

Such as this one!

Too creative!

Check these students from Mrs. O'Toole's class.

Lovely.

Yummy too!

I'll take one of those!

"Check mine, Mr. Hamer!"

A green alien.

Meanwhile back in class...

Monty was busy learning his times tables.

Yes, we did do a lot more on the Friday than simply check out our hairstyles, but that was the theme of the day.  With 12 of 20 students in attendance, we were able to catch up with our unfinished work folders.  See everyone next week!  Mr. Hamer OCT
