DAY 157

Mrs. Akle e-mailed me three pics from the Grade One field trip last week.

We find the boys and girls in the newly refurbished Museum of Science and Technology.

Looks like everyone enjoyed their time!

This little friend came to school today with these cool looking shoes!

They were white to start.

Then she painted them herself.

Mr. Hamer brought a microphone into the classroom today.

Starting tomorrow, the children will be given the opportunity to read their poetry into the mic.

Today we learned a bit more about probability.

Using some foam number cubes.

We gathered in a circle.

At the carpet.

Loads of fun.

Near the end of the lesson, the children were given the chance to try to roll doubles.

Here we go!

My turn!

Before the double toss, we passed around a single number cube.

After each child rolled their number cube, we tracked the number rolled on the board.

"Will I get a six?"

"Hey!  I did get a six!"

Too much fun.

We learned that we had a "one in six" chance to roll any number we chose.
After twenty rolls (20 pupils in the class), we believed that the numbers would "most likely" be scattered...and they were!  (We rolled for our two children who were absent.)

Let's check out some of the math which Natalie taught the students last week.

She asked the pupils to colour their work nicely.

They certainly did.

"Looks great, students!"

Some subtraction wheels.

Great work, class.

Blasting off!

Wow...some triple additions.

What is your favourite time of day?

Check out what some of the classmates wrote!

The time of day was unique to each child.

Lots of colourful responses.

We examine some of the science research on an animal of the students' choice.

Great research.

Great drawings.

Great effort!

Back to our Grade Two field trip last week.

For a walk in the forest.

Thanks to our many parent helpers!

Simon taught us about the sense of touch.

We had to stand still and feel the vibrations in the ground, like a snake would do.

When Simon and the parents stomped near a child, the students were to identify that they was nearest to them than anyone else.

Looking up at the beautiful canopy in Gatineau Park.

Then it was back across the magical bridge.  Check in tomorrow for more great pics from our class!  All the best, Mr. Hamer OCT

DAY 157

The sun brings out the best in everyone.

With the track and field tournament for the junior division coming up, it was practice time.

High jump went on under the watchful eye of Mr. Papineau over the noon hour recess period.

Mr. Hamer was on "yard duty" where he noticed some familiar looking faces!

Tree huggers to boot!

Orange and yellow Lego pieces must mean we visited the Learning Commons.

Which we did!

The sign says it all.

Celebration time, as always.

The lovely and talented Ms. Avilla.

Two classmates select some cool looking books!

A Lego invention.

From this famous inventor!

Time for relaxation.

The joy of reading.

And the joy of play!

Back in class it was over to the microphone.

Where the students selected...

...some of their favourite poems...

...to share with their peers.

They were all quite adept at the use of the mic.

Pure joy!

Fun poems were shared.

With lots of happiness.

And joy.

A quiet listener in the background.

Then it was on to some group work.

The class brainstormed all of the activities we did throughout the month of April.

For we make a class book for each month of the year.

And we hadn't done so for April.

To think...here we are almost at the end of May!

So...we checked Mr. Hamer's computer calendar.

And we checked this computer blog.

Where we learned that we did so much in April.

We came up with over 20 ideas.

Say...who's the masked marauder?

Aha!  Caught ya!

Some lovely work!
Check in tomorrow for some more pics from this week!
Have a relaxing evening everyone!

DAY 159

Hey!  It's Natalie again!

She's back to assist with scribing for the Grade Three and Grade Six EQAO tests.

We are currently in Mrs. Fraser's room.

The desks are all in rows and any charts on the wall that may offer advice during the testing have been taken down.

Each student has a library book on their desk.

If they finish their test early, they cannot get up and walk around...the simply read their book.

The Grade Six classroom across the room from our class.

All ready for the EQAO test.

Natalie was able to visit our room later in the morning.

Where she assisted the children with the reading of their poetry.

The class listened along.

While each child visited the microphone.

A little guidance required.

Pure joy.

Great reading.

The poetry is so creative!

Lots of fun ideas.

Each coloured card.

Represented a specific poem.

The children certainly took pride in their effort.

They couldn't wait for their turn to read.

The microphone experience is a new one for many of the students.

But they caught on really quickly.
Every student applauded their peer's poetry when they finished reading a selection.

Then we headed to the great outdoors.

It's fun hanging out with friends.

A big smile.

And many more!

Thanks for coming over to the portapack, Natalie!

Kids of all ages and sizes play together.

Quite the trio!

Fun in the sand.

Over lunch recess...

...we catch up with the high jump practice in session.

There's Mr. Papineau.

Some more of our April class book pages.

Colourful..

Great effort.

Lovely colour tones.

That's all for today!  Have a great evening!  Mr. Hamer OCT

DAY 160

School can be so colourful and fun!

Art was the subject for the afternoon on Friday.

Seeing as we re-jigged the schedule and had French in Block One.

Natalie is in to help scribe the tests for EQAO.
She tried out one of the ideas Mr. Hamer had for art on the day.

Mr. Hamer calls it "Contemporary Art".

You begin by "masking taping" the paper.
The children select three colours only for the artwork.
The challenge is in located the three colours so that no two sections of the same colour are across from each other...within reason.

Once the colouring aspect of the job is complete, you carefully remove the masking tape.
You actually peel it back carefully so as not to rip the paper or pull off a layer of paper.

Then, a wide, black Sharpie comes in handy to trace the outline to make the work "pop"!

Another example.

Two finished products.  Later they will be adhered to black construction paper to create a wider frame.  No worries about the table getting coloured...the marker wipes off in no time at all.

A focused artist.

Proud of her work.  (We'll see the completed artworks next week.)

Creative colours.

Next week, the children will name their work of art and they will determine (through a google search) which famous art gallery or museum it will be on loan from!

We created a class book on addition.  We recalled that the answer to an addition is called the sum and the numbers we add together are called the addends.  In the primary grades we learn that the sum is always a bigger number than any of the addends.

Some research time.

Lovely colours on her addition page.

Teamwork.

Friendship.

A blanched photograph of a great worker.

Art brings smiles.

And...bright colours too!

Looks like bubble gum to me!

Steady hands remove the masking tape.

He's already determined the location of his colours.

Arena art.

Getting ready for a great photo shoot!

The wonderful result!

Just a few more pics from our field trip the previous week.
Simon is reviewing all that we learned about how animals use their senses in nature.

The parents learned a great deal as well.

It's all ears!

And...all eyes!

Back in the nature centre we find a lovely model of a river in the Gatineaus.

A relief map of Gatineau Park adorns the wall.

The nature area.

Time for a washroom break.

And for gathering for a picture!

The lovely deer.

Bears.

Coyote...the wolf is just slightly out of the picture but can be seen in the previous shot.

Baby bear.

Sticks close to mama bear.

Rocky's cousins!  A raccoon and a wolverine.

Mrs. Eaton sent these next few pics as my camera battery ran out.

Eager listening to Simon's lesson.

Following lunch we went out into the grassy area beside the nature centre.

Where we played a great game of soccer.

With participants from all of the classes.

Some more pics from our probability unit.

What number will she roll.

Will she get doubles?

Who knows?

More pics of our animal research.

The children picked from a variety of animals.

Some great illustrations of the animal.

Well done, class!

Another zebra!

Love the spots.

Still more spots.

The microphone was fun for the students.

They eagerly raised their hands to ask for the next turn.

They wrote some really creative poetry.

They had fun reading it.

They realized that they did not have to speak very loud into the mic.

Just simply hold it close to your mouth, but don't touch it with your lips.

Some shots from outdoors during this sunny week.

Lots of four-square action.

It's Superman!

Hoop fun.

With the basketball.

Even a soccer ball will do!

Let's hope for some more fine weather next week!

When you will get to see the finished artworks.

From a colourful class of children!  Have a great weekend everyone!
Mr. Hamer, OCT
