Week Thirty-Nine Two More to Go!

Day 175

We have a star in our midst.
Remember...you can enlarge the picture simply by clicking on it.
You can return to the default look of the page by clicking outside the image.

Perhaps he may appear at Stratford in a few short years.
To see pics from the play he was a part of go back to last week's entry and find day 175. Mr. Hamer just got caught up with those entries this evening!

I'll catch up with a few more items from last week.

The children enjoyed creating an autograph page for their class book.

At the end of the year, the students will take home all of their work folders.

They will all be given their page from each of the 70 or so class books we produced throughout the school year.

Yes, their class book will be a great keepsake memory of the entire year.

It will be some 70 pages long!

I'll have to get bigger bindings for each book as the typical one produced every third day or so is only 20 pages long (20 students) plus a cover page created by Mr. Hamer.

It's fun photographing the children when they are hard at work.

Seeing which colours they will select.

Observing the concentration on their part.

Some finish early and prefer to read a book.

Some work with friends (these two are also neighbours!).

We are standing for the national anthem.

As you have seen in the past, we sing the anthem and we "sign" the anthem.

It's fun eavesdropping on their little conversations as they work.

Having the desks in islands promotes cooperation.

Everyone must learn to get along with each other.

Group mates.

Lovely colouring of her work.

Staying on task.

Sharing supplies.

Showing pride in her work.

Some more pics from last week's play.

Held on Friday in the gym.

It was amazing the number of lines some of the main actors had!

Some appeared in all six scenes.

Beauty is the Beast was a terrific play with a great message of appreciating others for their inner beauty rather than their outer beauty.

Yes, teachers like to goof around as well.

We love to celebrate each other's milestones and accomplishments.

One teacher is expecting a girl and another is expecting a boy!
(No...Mrs. Eaton is not one of the two expecting...she just happened to be near to the balloons when I snapped this shot!  Hehehe!)

While Mr. Hamer is expecting a cupcake from this amazing cake of cupcakes!!!

Got one!  Yabba Dabb Doo!

Some more pics from our visit to the park last week.

A broken arm doesn't stop this little one.

Relaxing in the sun...he's got it made!

Climbing the web in the shade.

Two cool kids.

Aha!  A few pics from this mornings "truncated" walk-a-thon.

For shortly after we made our way to the park.

And no sooner had we done a lap or two.

The skies threatened.

And we had to head back with thunder and lightning fast approaching.

Here's Mr. "M", our new French teacher for the rest of the year!
More pics from the walk-a-thon tomorrow.

We got in the class just before the rains came!

And we broke off into groups.

To make structures out of GOOS (Good On One Side) paper.
More pics of this activity tomorrow as well.

Two "attendance runners" from French class that Mr. Hamer caught up with in the main hallway of the big school.

Say, Mr. Hamer doesn't get into too many pictures...so here is a shot taken this past Saturday morning when he was out at a friend's house running trains on a big garden layout!
Check in for more pics from today...tomorrow!  See you Thursday!
Also, remember to check in to last week's entry as I posted many more pics from the play and some from the classroom earlier this evening before I started this week's posting entry.
Mr. Hamer OCT.

Day 176

Let's check back in on our play from last week.

"Beauty..."

"is the Beast!"

And...what a great play it was!

The young actors outdid themselves.

Knowing all of their lines.

Knowing all of their positioning on the stage.

And...if they forgot a line or two, a fellow actor fed it to them!  Bravo!

Some pixie dust!

Time to bring on the actors following the finish of the play.

Taking her bow.

Family and friends snap pics.

Proud parents.

A few more shots from the walk-a-thon.

In the park.

Across the street.

With classmates.

With friends.

Lots of happy little people.

Laughter.

Oh no!  The storm is coming in!

So we headed back to class and reviewed how to balance equations.

Some note-taking.

Cool drawings.

Great effort.

Then it was on to structure building.

Using only two materials...

...tape and GOOS paper.

Concentration.

Assisting each other.

Visiting friends.

Teamwork.

Coming along.

Some sit, some stand.

Four hands make work light.

The "red" team.

A skyscraper.

Oh ya!

A house.

Oh ya...too!

Happy smiles.

Let's check in with our visit to the park last week.

"Into the Woods!"

A field of friends.

Explorers.

Yabba dabba doo!

The new structure.

The new see-saw.

Peek-a-boo!

Look at me.

Look at me too!

He's a social climber!

Tomorrow we have a visit from the parents of one of our classmates who will take us through a variety of science experiments in the Learning Commons with the three other grade one classes.  Should be lots of learning fun!

As promised, here is that link again to my model railroad when it was featured on CTV's Regional Contact show some ten years or so ago!  (You may have to copy and paste the link into your address bar.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PajlKe5l0_8

Thanks to those who have already sent in their form for a time slot to visit Mr. Hamer's trains on Thursday evening.  You still have until tomorrow to bring it in should you wish to visit my home.  Tomorrow I will send a quick note home telling you of your time for the visit and giving you directions to my home in the Elmvale Acres neighbourhood of Alta Vista..

Have a lovely evening!  Mr. Hamer, OCT

Day 177

You recall this picture of two of our friends from the other day?
Well, the young lad on the right enjoyed special visitors to his class today.

His mom and dad!

And...how thankful our grade ones and twos were to have them come and visit.

To share some great science with us.

As they both are real-live scientists!

The first discussion was on safety...the wearing of safety gloves, safety goggles and even safety gowns for protection when conducting their experiments.

And what fun experiments they were!

Lighting a special material a flame.

It disappears in mid air with not a remnant touching the ground!

Lots of great answers to questions.

Lots of great attention to the table up front.

Chemicals reacting...bubbling.

Changing colour.

Anticipating.

Checking.

More colour changes!

Adding more chemicals.

More reactions.

Still more colour changes!

What has caught our two scientists' attention over to their left?

There is something hanging around on the table!

Our male scientist checks things out.

It's a blue hand to match his two other blue hands!

What did he put in that balloon to make it inflate?
Do you remember?
I believe it was some dry ice...solid carbon dioxide.

Our female scientist is looking over to me!  Am I in trouble?  Yikes!

Yes, I am the chosen guinea pig after Mrs. Bellamy thought I had more hot air in me that she had in she!  Hehehe!  Look at the colour of the liquid in the container I am holding.

Now check out the colour after my carbon dioxide has been blown into the glass vessel.

It's changing!

Way too cool!

Time for another experiment.

The old-fashioned film canister ("Remember those?" our female scientist asks) contains some good old fashioned baking soda or sodium bicarbonate.

Each scientist has filled their film canister with a liberal amount.

He goes to the right...

...while she goes to the left.

Adding a bit of liquid.

There are two canisters...

...and then there were one!  Where did it go?  Check in tomorrow to find out.
We would like to take this time to thank our two scientist volunteers for such a wonderful workshop for over 80 students.  You both were truly inspiring!

Remember...bring your bathing suits, towels, sunscreen and food item for tomorrow's Friendship Lunch and visit to the Splash Pad in the park across the street.

I also look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow evening at my home for a visit to my model railroad!

I'm now heading out to a choral event where my lovely daughter is singing tonight.
Have a great evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 178

It was time for our Friendship Lunch today.

What an exciting time it was!

Lots of healthy food choices.

And lots of "fun" choices as well!

Mrs. O'Toole loaned us her classroom as she was away on the grade three field trip to Upper Canada Village.

Then it was outside for our trip across the street to the park...but first a quick intercept with Mme Gariepy and her lovely little baby!

Mr. "M" chats with our parent volunteer.

A popsicle trio!

Mother and son!

The water is flowing!

Hi Mrs. Gillam!

Too much fun!

"Peek-a-boo" times two!

Swing tire fun...even for our little girl with the "wounded wing."

Are we dizzy yet?

Some nice new additions to the park!

Go Redblacks Go!

This evening, Mr. Hamer hosted some of his students at his home.

With family members...for a visit to see his model railroad.

It was a joy sharing my passion with our lovely families.

Rapt attention in search of items on our scavenger hunt.

Sister Act!

Hi Natalie!

Natalie offers up a clue..."You're getting warm...now you're hot!"

"There it is!" points out this little friend.

"I love it here!" she says.

Mother and daughter.

Father too...with Natalie's wonderful smile!

Grandma got in on the act and found a host of items!

Father and son!

A group shot.

Great parents.

A great family!

Father and daughter.

Mom with Natalie.

Here are a few pics I've taken over the years of the model railroad in my basement.

It was fun sharing my work of art with the students and their families.

It sure is great having hobbies.

Especially when they are interactive.

And take time and devotion to complete.

Thanks to our families who signed up to come out.

Thanks for checking in.  Tomorrow I will post more images from the week that was...including further shots from our great scientist workshop, pics from the park and more train ones as well!  Have a great evening!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 179

Just returned from the DQ after hosting some more families at my home to see my model railroad.  But...first I'd like to go back to our visit from our two great looking scientists.
Indeed, dad's "rocket" waited a long time..."

The chemical reaction for this experiment was very interesting.  Note the colour of the liquid.

Now it has changed!

Now it's back to the original colour.

Nope...changed again!

Now back to clear!

Our female scientist placed liquids containing various elements in five petri dishes.

When lit, the flames from the differing elements took on specific colours.

With the lights dimmed, it was a spectacular display.

The natural amphitheater atmosphere of the pit in the learning commons is great for viewing for all the young ones.  They are captivated by all of the experiments.

Our balloon buddy wears some safety goggles.

Check out the large test tube.

We wonder what will happen.

Perhaps a few of the children have a prediction or two!

Let's check out what happens when another chemical is poured into the large test tube.

Yikes!

Amazing!

He's got his safety goggles on.

For the pickle experiment.

Electricity creates heat which creates light.
Check in next week for a few more images from this amazing science workshop!

A few more fun pics from our Friendship Lunch.

Love the fangs!

Excited youngsters.

Dessert!  Yummy!

Then it was off to the park...here are some more additional shots from a great day.

Popsicles and a climbing structure...summer couldn't be any better!

With a little water thrown into the mix.

And a beach towel or two!

Slumbering in the shade.

Some brave souls.

A happy wanderer.

And another!

Too much fun!

Can I have a turn?

Mrs. Akle and Ms. Adrianna.

On the grass.

Ready for a dip.

Back to Mr. Hamer's place.

Dad's got strong arms.  He must do a lot of power lifting!  Meanwhile mom's all smiles.

Mother and daughter.

A group shot.

Dad gave Mr. Hamer a ride in this amazing car...a Tesla!  Yabba dabba doo!

Just a few more shots from Mr. Hamer's model railroad.

Mr. Hamer can run one of seven trains at any one time.

One of his favourite aspects of the hobby is making realistic scenery.

Mr. Hamer also operates the railroad in a highly prototypical manner.

Some trains are so long they require more than a single locomotive...in this case...three!

A nice "close-up" shot near the station platform.

Tiptoeing onto the bridge.

Same bridge on another day travelling in the opposite direction.

Through the rock cut.

A "going away" shot of a train which left Boston, MA in the morning and will be in Portland, Maine by mid-afternoon.

Thanks to all the families who signed up to come for a visit.  I really had a ton of fun sharing one of my many hobbies with you!  To all my families, have a great weekend!

On Monday, we get to visit the Splash Pad once again...this time as a grade two class.  All of the member of our combined grade one/two class are welcome!

Check in next week for our last installment of the blog where we will see more pics from the activities of this past week as well as new images from next week's activities.

One last thing...I was so proud of our class who sat so reverently throughout our year-end liturgy this morning in the gymnasiun.  Mr. Hamer was occupied with his guitar helping run the liturgy and our class was so well behaved and mature throughout!

BTW...that Dairy Queen Blizzard following my last train visits was "oh so good!"
