Indeed, with the temperatures continuing to plummet, it was "indoor recess" all day today.

Creative friends gathered together.

To create "creative" creations...now that's a tongue twister!

A colourful collage.

Created with utmost concentration.

"How do you like my triangle art?"

Now that's some cool-looking geometry!

"Check out mine!"

Triangles in differing sizes and positions.

"I used magic markers."

"To create this hexagon art."

"I also used hexagons."

"I love combining math with art."

Today we placed more work into our folders.

The children showcased a favourite page.

These images are from our Religion folder.

"I take great care with my colouring."

Click on the images to read some of our family traditions.

Our pages will be placed into a class book with this cover Mr. Hamer made.

It's fun listening to each other's stories.

About how they spend their holidays.

We all have similar and different traditions.

Mr. Hamer could not send his newsletter as his computer was unable to print to the photocopier.
This is the reminder note sent home with our Grade Two friends regarding the Sacramental meeting next Monday evening.

With this being the form that must be filled out.

Hopefully the frigid temps will rise this week.

Final note.  The "Noun Hound" homework sheet is quite easy.
Simply have your child list two people, two places, two things, two common nouns and two proper nouns.  We reviewed the sheet in class.  Then have them draw a picture in the small area of one of the nouns they listed.  Finally, have your child colour in the lettering beautifully as well as the background.  Have a great week everyone!

Day 83

Today was "numbers" day.

Students came up to the old-fashioned blackboard and wrote their numbers in the various acceptable forms.

Some required a bit of assistance.

Some encountered no trouble at all.

Others had an "aha!" moment when they recognized a variant form that they hadn't thought about.

Some numbers we figured are pretty much made in one manner.

Like five and six.

Some have many variations.

We found three ways for the number eight.

And...two for the number nine.  Lots of fun!

Let's check back in on our geometry art.

Triangles in a row.

Plenty of hexagons.

Make for a cool design.

Tons of rectangles.

In both horizontal and vertical positioning.

Even some circles.

In two colours.

This girl is proud of her Religion activity.

After we studied about Adam and Eve.

This young lass was happy to learn...

...on which day of the week she was born.  Remember that homework activity?

It's fun to share read-alouds at carpet.

We read a great story by Jan Brett, a well-known children's author and illustrator.
To re-read the story in video form, copy the link below into your address bar.

Back on the snow day last week when the buses were cancelled, Mr. Hamer had fun with the school children who made it into school.  The classes were combined and Mr. Hamer had a group of 34 students from all the four classes that contain Grade Two...including his five Grade Ones who made it into school.  He asked them if they noticed anything similar about all of the above words.

And about these four sentences.

And...this phrase.  Can you figure it out?
Check in tomorrow for the answer...but you probably already know!

Click on the images to make them larger so that you can read some more family traditions.

Click outside the image to return to the default page setting.

Traditions are important.

One tradition Mr. Hamer has made for himself this year is to post to our classroom blog every evening when he gets home.  Of course, there will be some occasions when he has to go out for a dinner function.  In this case, the blog would be caught up the following day!
Have a peaceful and relaxing evening!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 84

Today we read the Bible story of Noah's Ark.
We'll share more on that later.

Just after the morning bell announced the beginning of school I spotted two zebras enter the classroom wearing their stripes with them!

One of the zebras shared her math art.

Yup, geometry sure is fun.

We learned a cool rule about the letters "q" and "u".

Then it was off to the Learning Commons.

Where we exchanged our library books and played in the "creativity" centres.

The learning commons now has a Lego wall.

Where you can make happy face messages to friends.

Or build machines that move.

Then stick them to the wall!

Or we can play from the MakerSpace area.

The Lego bins are all categorized by colour.

The children love this centre.

Yellow pieces.

Red pieces.

A drawer of blue.

Would you like to try some purple?

Lots of sharing.

And joy.

Even black, grey and white.

Or brown.

A cool looking toque!

We read My Goat Gertrude to the halfway point.  We'll finish it tomorrow.

There's a real motor inside this wonderful contraption.

Girl Power!

More building.

"My house of the future!"

Creative areas to work.

How about the piano bench?

More neat creations.

Smiles.

And...more smiles!

Still more smiles!

Of course we love to read as well.

Check out some of the new furniture.

It is of high quality and will stand up to the wear and tear a school full of children will bring its way.

Following the reading of the Bible story, we watched a cartoon for kids on Noah's Ark.

They learned how the locals mocked Noah for building such a huge floating vessel in the middle of the land far away from the water.

But they soon looked at Noah differently when the rains came shortly after the door to the Ark was closed.  (Mr. Hamer visited the country of Turkey about five years ago.  Mt. Ararat is in Turkey, the location where it is believed the Ark came to rest.)

Let's check back in with our integrated math/art assignment.

Super hexagons!

A proud peer.

Neat triangles.

"I chose hexagons as well!"

And...we're glad you did!

This is my favourite page in my Religion folder.

I have learned the importance of being respectful of others, my classroom, my peers and their belongings.

"I enjoyed when Mr. Hamer read us the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden."

"Boy, oh boy...did they ever learn a lesson!"

Click on the image to read about this family's traditions.

Or this family's.

How about this one?

Or this one!

Say, did you notice anything similar about all these words.
Yes, they are spelled the same frontwards and backwards!
They are called "Palindromes".

Here we have four palindrome phrases.  If you don't take into account the spaces between the words in the sentences, you will notice that they are spelled exactly the same frontwards as they are backwards!  Cool, eh?  (Notice the second sentence from the top...it was probably the first sentence Adam spoke when he met Eve in the Garden of Eden!)

Mr. Hamer's favourite phrase.

Well, it's not Monday tomorrow, but we are going sliding like the pair in the image above.  So, remember to bring all of your warmest winter clothes to school!  Have a fine evening folks.  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 85

Today was a day for sliding.

And...a day for measuring.

The students worked in groups.

They were given five objects to measure.

They were given a non-standard unit of measure to use.

It was a paper clip.

They first had to estimate how many paper clips each distance was.

Then they measured the actual length.

They recorded their estimate and their actual measurement on a grid.

A floor tile was one of the items to measure.

With each student in the pairing have a paper clip, things went relatively quick.

The width of the carpet library bookcase was another item requiring measurement.

One concept the children learned pretty quickly was...

...the longer the item to be measured meant the more difficult to come up with a close estimate.

They had to measure the height of their "soft book" notebook.

As well as the width of their desk.

Hands in action.

Teamwork.

Lots of "math talk" as well.

Later on, it was outdoors for physical education class.

Over to the hill.

In the park across the street.

Lots of well-dressed students.

W-e-e!  There she goes!

Getting ready!

The students get quite a great deal of exercise as they must walk back up the hill.

But they're up for it!

Rosy cheeks and all.

Although today was quite mild considering the temps we've experienced of late.

"Hi Mr. Hamer!"

Off he goes!

"This is radical!"

"This is the best day ever!"

Loads of kids.

Hmmmm...he's supposed to walk up the side of the hill...grrrr.

"Look at us, Mr. Hamer!"

Well...if I could "measure" their level of happiness based on those cheerful smiles, the measurement would be off the scales.  Mr. Hamer has to rush off to a music engagement, so check in tomorrow for more pics from measuring and sliding and more images of the students' favourite pieces of work they have done...not to forget some more of our "family traditions" pages.  Have a cozy and comfy evening!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 86

Yabba Dabba Doo!  It's Friday!

Mrs. Hamer dug in the closets to find some more great educational games the children could enjoy as an activity when they have completed their work.

Remember those slide puzzles?

Here's a 3D one of a fish.

It's pretty challenging but she's making a great go of it!

Some finger puzzles as well.  You push up through the holes in the bottom of the puzzle to move the coloured balls around to match the pattern on one of the cards you select.  The two puzzles and cards are on my teacher's desk for the photo, but they haven't been played with up to this point.

Another challenging hand puzzle where you have to use your fingers to press the balls from below while spinning the device.  The goal is to get all the coloured balls into their counterpart coloured location.  It's a real toughy!

The hexagon shapes saw some play time.

The girls are attempting to create a puzzle to match the one on the card they chose.

Earlier in the day, one little friend had fun creating her own pattern.

Looks like a yummy pie!

Our little boy with the goatee beard is admiring this young lady's beautiful creation.

She is playing with the peg boards.

Of course, if the children finish their work, another activity they can select is to go on the chrome book with their headphones.  Get a load of this pair with matching head ware or should I spell...head wear!

The lads enjoy some downtime.

Others sharing their progress with each other.

All eyes on the screen.

"Thanks, Mr. Hamer, for letting us go on the chrome books and toys at the end of the day!"

Some more pics...

...from Thursday's sliding.

Happy times.

Lots of exercise.

Out in the white stuff!

Gravity takes you down and muscle power brings you back up!

Too much fun!

Later, it was out on the junior playground with the kindergarten class.

The snowplow has created a great mountain range.

From plowing the school playground.

The children enjoy the climbing and sliding.

On the church land we rent for a dollar each year!

Some more measuring pics from Thursday's math lesson.

Many hands make light work.

We're teams.

We're learning to work together.

Down on the floor.

We measure the tile.

The old carpenter's adage of "Measure twice, cut once," is in effect as this lad verifies his earlier measurement.

On all his items.

"Here's my math art."

Triangle power.

"And...here's mine!"

Crop circles!  Yikes!

"I like this page in my Religion folder."

"From when we read the story of Creation."

"I like the same page!"

"Do you like my colouring?"
Yes we do!

"On my favourite page, you had to find a number of objects hidden in the picture and only colour them.

It was fun to do.

As all God's little creatures say...Happy Friday!!!!
Have a great weekend!
Mr. Hamer OCT
