Today was an interesting day at school.  Some 74 school children were absent throughout the whole school not to mention the many who had to leave throughout the day.  Whatever bug is going around sure is a powerful one.  In fact, this evening when I was speaking at church I suddenly felt something coming on real quick...so it's off to bed right after I write this blog entry.

Today we estimated and measured different items from the ones we measured last week.

We also changed our non-standard unit of measure.

Last week it was a paper clip.

Today we used scissors and we measured some items of longer length.

The children liked taking turns to be the dedicated partner for the different measuring activities while their classmates watched on.

We once again learned that the longer the length, the more difficult it is to get a close estimate.

But the smiles abound.

With lots of discussion as well.

In fact two of our items we measured were the same ones we had checked in on last week.

We learned that the carpet library measures less scissor lengths than paper clip lengths.

Therefore, the concept the children realized was that if you use a shorter unit, then you will need many more of them...and you will get a larger number.  If you use a longer unit of measure then you won't need as many and your measurement amount will be smaller.

The children were very careful while holding the scissors.

They kept their unit of measure very still while their buddy moved his.

And vice-versa.

The girls must have phoned themselves before they came to school.

So they could wear the same colours!  Hehehe!

Indeed, measuring sure is fun!
Off to an early bed to try to keep those flu bugs at bay!

Day 88

Yup, the CBC radio mentioned early in the AM that all buses were cancelled "everywhere"!
That means a handful of students and a little break for the teachers, in particular this one who was nursing his tummy back into shape!  Hehehe.

The students who arrived early before the school bell headed straight to their classrooms.

We would be joining up classes on the day with a different teacher teaching each block.

In total we had 20 Grade Two students including Mr. Hamer's Grade Ones who made it into school.

The boys are proud to solve some of the fun finger puzzles.

And just had to show me each time!

Four students only from our class by the 9:15 AM bell.

Cool design.

So, we combined the classes.

Still more children arrived.

Mrs. Roche taught them first.

She took the boys and girls to the gym.

Back in Mrs. Roche's class.

Mrs. Ferrito has the recess duty.

The children get out their colouring materials.

Or toys to play with at carpet.

Lots of fun for everyone.

Some make crafts.

Fun efforts.

Block Two found the children in Mrs. Eaton's classroom.

Where the students had fun writing on the vertical surface white boards.

Mrs. Johnson looks on.

Colourful chairs.

For colourful students.

Who produce colourful works.

Everyone's on task.

Completing an activity.

At their small tables.

Lots of energy.

Hi Mrs. Eaton!

Team work.

In groups.

Dedication.

More fun at the white board.

Show us what you've produced!

She can fill her bucket.

And...so can he!

The afternoon brought the children over to the portapack.

For indoor recess.

With new friends enjoying the creative toys.

In all colours.

Nice creation!

A proud lad.

Check out the cool models.

Super effort.

Fabulous!

A proud visitor.

Lots of sharing.

Mme. Pepe taught French in Block Three and Mr. Hamer read a story in Block Four.
This little lad tells us to have a wonderful evening!

Day 89

On Wednesday our Grade Two students began their Reconciliation lessons in Religion class.

They were given this lovely book as a working resource.

The first page will have to be filled out with information from home.
Next week, I will send a photocopy of this page home for parents to fill out.
The students will not have to draw the picture as they will simply transfer the information into their book in class.

Working to "spiff up" the cover.

"I like my frame!"

We like it too!

A full colouring job!

Looks colourful, for sure!

"How do you like my cover?"

We love it!

A rainbow frame.

Looks beautiful.

Another proud pupil.

With a lovely frame.

A quick glance at a developing picture.

Our twelve Grade Two students.

A picture of a little girl in a frame.

A mini-robot.

"Here is my favourite page..."

"...from my Language folder."

"I like this Halloween activity."

Cool!

"Here's a little poem we recited in class one day."

"Then we coloured the page."

Have a great evening everyone.  I will post today's activities tomorrow evening or over the weekend.  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 90

...of our new Reconciliation booklet.

Smiling faces.

Colourful borders.

Proud grade two pupils.

Take care with their work.

We are learning...

...that our God always forgives...

...no matter what...

...and we learn...

...that saying "Sorry"...

...and meaning what you say goes a long way to healing.

Another posting of this fun photo of our Grade Two friends.

"Here's a favourite page of mine."

"It's from my Language Arts book."

"I like word searches."

"As long as they're not too hard."

"I like unscrambling words."

"At Christmas time."

We check in on the model building club in the Learning Commons.

Hey, Mr. Papineau...how's it going?

Looks like a busy group.

...and...

...a focused one...

...for sure...

Thursday we listened to a Michael Mitchell song.

It's his version of the old standard called...

...Canada Is.

Feel free to conduct a Google search on "Canada Is" by "Michael Mitchell" to see this version of the song.  Have a great rest of your weekend!  Mr. Hamer OCT
