Day 134

Well looky here would'ya!

Catching a picture of someone else taking a picture of three lovely ladies who just love "snow days"...and, don't we all?

Hmmf...Mr. Hamer...that's if we don't have to drive far to get to school in this unkind weather!

Looking out from the portapack door.

Looking into the room from the classroom door...where are all the students?

Oh...here they are.

Already hard at work.

In Mrs. Roche's class.

Combined together.

With students from the three other grade two classes.

Some of our friends.

She's enjoying the view the window offers, as long as she stays inside!

Two other grade two-ers!

Mrs. Roche helping out.

As is Mrs. Johnson.

It's fun to work at school.

With friends.  The students actually spent four blocks with four different teachers.

The teachers do "Soup Monday" where two staff members bring in soup on a round robin basis.

And treats to boot!

More pics back in class.

Looks like a serious game going on.

Total concentration.

Some recess carpet fun.

With toys from another class.

 It's great to build.

And go on computers too.

Lots of smiles.

All around.

All kinds of funny faces.

So there you see.

On snow days we work.

But we have fun too!

All these children can say is..."Let's hope for better weather tomorrow!"
Have a wonderful evening "denning in" tonight!
Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 135

On my planning time in Block Three I caught up with the boys' basketball team returning from their tournament.  They were excited to tell me that they were 5 and 2 in their games.
Way to go Mr. Papineau and team!

We began our unit on poetry this morning.

The students wrote four of the ten lines required for a Biopoem I shared with them.

Even though their poems remain unfinished...

...the girls and boys were all eager to come up to the front of class...

...to share with their mates their first four lines.

Lots of enthusiasm for sure!

The first line of their poem contains their first name only.

The second line showcases four character traits they selected from a master list of almost 100 traits.

Line three begins with...Loves to...

Line four starts off with...Cares deeply about...

In the afternoon...

...we brainstormed many ideas about how we can help out our planet.

Even though today was not Earth Day, we made it so in our class!

The page contains a starter sentence.

As a class, we brainstormed four possible second sentences.

Then we brainstormed four possible third sentences.

Then, finally...four possible closing sentences.

The children enjoyed coming up with ideas for the sentences.

They were keen to select one from each set of four for their writing.

The published class book.

This young lad has already taken it from our "class book" library to read!

Some samples...

...of the chosen sentences...

...along with some nice colouring...

...showing the pride the children take in their personal work...

...especially when their personal work helps to create a "team" collaborative book!

A few more images from my jaunt down the hallways of the school.

When I am on my planning time.

Indeed, there are a lot of great activities going on all around the school.
St. Bernard rules!  Have a lovely evening everyone!
Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 136

Today our buddy class came by.

Mr. Papineau dropped them off and headed back into the school.

For the in-service held for junior teachers.

We appreciate our Grade Five friends.

Following a discussion around a few Bible stories we got down to work.

With some of our buddies being from our own family!  Brotherly love!

Friendly smiles.

The task for our Grade Five friends was to assist their primary grade buddies with a writing activity.

The goal of the activity was to write about their favourite toy.

The older students acted as guides for spelling and editing,

So much fun!

An aerial view.

Showcases lots of learning going on.

I wonder what the favourite toy is for our buddies?

We are having so much fun!

Some more family ties.

Sister act...collecting the plastic bags.

In the afternoon we learned about animal tracks.

They can be made in the mud, in the snow or in any loose material.

Animals big and small leave tracks where they roam.

It's fun trying to identify the animal that leaves a track.

Tracks vary in shape, style and size.

See the pads.

Paw shaped.

The toes outlined.

Hooves leave unique looking patterns.

Like these ones.  More tracks to share tomorrow.

Some more pics from our Earth Day work.

Which became a published book.

Showing a nice sense of pride in their work.

Love the creativity!

A closer examination.

Of the brainstormed sentences.

To be used...

...to complete the writing task.

Some more pupils read their poetry.

In front of the class.

That takes courage.

But the children are up to the task.

Can't wait to hear the finished poem!

The children were encouraged to project their voices and they all did a great job!
Have a super evening!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 137

Our Grade Two students are making their fish for the fishing net that will be on display for our "Breakfast on the Shore" celebration next week.

In order to make the fish, they first must colour two versions...with one fish pointing to the right and the other to the left.

You will see why later on.

Then, it was off to the learning commons for a song rehearsal.

Where all of our Grade Twos are lined up by class.

That's four classrooms full of Grade Twos!

From the learning commons we made our way to the gym.

Here we are warming up.

Doing some fun stretching activities.

Students enjoy the opportunity to lead these activities.

Utility balls...some not fully inflated...but enough that are for all the children to enjoy a ball each.

To the bin...to the bin!!!

Mr. Hamer demonstrated a variety of activities that could be done with the balls.

Lots of fun!

Cool shots!

Cool lads!

A close up view of some of our Fave Toy pages.

The first few here are from some of the girls.

Tomorrow you will see some of the boys' selections.

Love the drawing!

At lunch time I catch up with Mr. Papineau in the modelling club.

Looks cool!

Back to the fish.

While the front has been coloured, we have to outline the back of each sheet.

Here's the front of many of them.

This young lady shows her two fish.

Why two fish, you wonder?

Because they have to be stapled together back to back.

Like so.

Then we get wads of toilet paper to act as stuffing.

Stuffing the fish.

Here's one side.

Here's the other.

Looking good!

A rainbow fish on one side.

And a rainbow fish on the other.

A great catch of fish!

With still more to come tomorrow!
Have a lovely evening everyone!
Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 138

We are so excited for one of our educational assistants, Ms. Simone, who has found a job elsewhere which suits her personal needs.  She will be deeply missed.

Here was how she said goodbye to the staff on Friday.

Lots of fun treats!

With lots of "puns" to match!

We will miss you, Ms. Simone.

We held a choir rehearsal Friday due to Monday's "Snow Day".

Lots of students in choir.

With lots of happy faces.

We sure do have fun.

When our Grade One/Two students are in French avec Mme Pepe, I work with other children around the school.

Which finds me in the Learning Commons a great deal of the time.

Sometimes we get visited by a group of buddy classes.  It is so nice to see the older students working with the younger ones.

Say!  Check out all the plastic bags we have been collecting.

The number is huge!

The bags almost fill one of the junior class cloakrooms!

I love how this display in the hallway of the school changes from time to time.
The butterfly certainly is a harbinger of nice weather to come!

In the afternoon we only had 13 students in class.

So it was "catch-up" time.

Which allowed some students time to play.

With the educational toys.

Or role-play school.

Too much fun.

Ms. Kathryn, our ELL teacher.

Mr. Papineau and the boys.

Going through the drills.

In preparation for the basketball meet.

A creative little girl!

Let's check in on our gym class from Thursday.

The girl with the heart on her shirt is leading the warm-ups on this day.

Utility ball fun.

Got a basket!

"Hi Mr. Hamer!"

"Check out this pose, Mr. Hamer!"

"Peace to you!"

"I love gym!"

"I can do so many things with the ball!"

"I just got a hoop!"

"I'm going to score!"

"I love gym class!"

"What a save!"

And...another!

We had fun practising our songs for our "Breakfast on the Shore."

Mrs. Roche and Mrs. Eaton.

The Lego board.

A cool looking fish!

Let's check in on some more snow tracks.  Can you identify these?

Of course we can!

Which way is that animal travelling?

Tracks from "around" the world.

Who made these ones?

Aha!

What about these ones?

Is this a good enough clue?

You betcha!

Even some human tracks!  Hehehe!

More pics from our buddy visit.

Where we produced another class book.

On our "Fave Toy".

Lots of great discussion in pairs.

Before the writing process.

Teamwork.

"Does your toy spin?"

"Is your fave toy cuddly?"

Great input.

"Can you play with it with a friend?"

"Can you play with it with a brother?"

Have a great weekend all!  The weather promises to turn for the good...unless you like the cold!  Big grin!  All the best, Mr. Hamer OCT
