Day 129

Yesterday, Sunday, April the 8th was our First Holy Communion Day for our Grade Two friends.

The mass took place at our parish church, St. Bernard Catholic Church.

A special day, indeed.

A few photos of some of our friends.

Handsome and beautiful they all looked.

Lots of smiles!

A huge crowd, for sure!

Then it was back to normal this morning.

As the students headed to their desks to write down their agenda.

And work on a spelling sheet.

Devoted concentration.

Hard at work.

This young lad sports a new haircut.  Looks great!

He also wore green in honour of the young hockey players from Humbolt, Saskatchewan who lost their lives this past weekend.  Indeed our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who lost loved ones.

It's interesting to note that Mrs. Lewis (who taught many of the children from our class Kindergarten) is now teaching in Humbolt, Saskatchewan.  Her husband is a newly appointed RCMP constable and that is where their family was stationed.

Please keep Mrs. Lewis in your thoughts and prayers as I do know that she has a couple of friends who lost loved ones.

In class we spoke for a short period of time about this loss.

The students gained an understanding at their own level about the rarity of these events and about just how precious life is.

Today we worked on a class book about our Lenten Fundraising.

As a class we brainstormed some good vocabulary to use in our writing.

Then the boys and girls were given a piece of GOOS paper for their rough draft.

They all wrote four or five lines.

After conferencing with Mr. Hamer, they were given the "go-ahead" to print out their good copy.

They are proud to show off their completed work.

They are proud to have been a part of the fund-raising effort.

They are also proud to learn that their contributions certainly help make a difference in the lives of others.

Lovely work all around.

I was happy to read over the finished homework from last week.
It was interesting to see which consonant blends the children selected as there were a few examples that offered a couple of choices.

We learned today that subtracting is easy...and fun!

Spelling too!

Another book almost ready to be published.
Not to worry...I will cover a review of the month of March at some point this week!
Have a wonderful evening with your family!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 130

A view of the students in class.

The times tables were fun to learn.

Playing in the gym gets our heart rate up.

Get that ball!

Over here!

We studied the story of the Good Samaritan.

Our junior buddy class visited.

They helped us create a class book.

Lots of learning fun!

We learned about our own personal heroes.

And...what a busy and exciting month March was at St. Bernard Catholic School!
All the best, Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 131

Today we visited the Learning Commons to exchange our library books.

We also found time to lounge around and read awhile.

Some of us had a chance to play with the Lego Wall and at the Makerspace.

Here's Mrs. Avila chatting with the group.

Some pictures have been posted near the entrance to the Commons.

The images show the location of the furniture.

As well as the juxtaposition of items.

The Makerspace.

Some new tall tables and chairs.

Fancy!

Too cool!

We make sure we leave the items in the same way they were when we entered.

The location for the makerspace.

The pit with its furniture.

Genius Lounge occurs one lunch period per week.

Some fine seating arrangements.

Check this page out, Mr. Hamer!

Nice big font.

Hilarious!

Pals.

Look what I made at the Makerspace.

Tomorrow, across the nation, it is jersey day or "wear green" day in honour of the Humbolt Broncos.  Looking forward to seeing what everyone brings along!

Have a lovely evening all!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 132

Thursday brought this little gift to our prayer table.

Thanks to this young lad.

In his Ottawa Sens jersey.

A lovely candle holder!
Such a special gift!

Still more jerseys.

No problem...a Sen will come to the rescue.

And another!

Still another!

Our new office administrator supports the LA Kings with her Ontario version of their jersey.
She actually supports her nephew who happens to play in the LA Kings farm system.
Thanks to all those who wore jerseys or who wore green in support of the Humbolt Bronco hockey club.

Time for some parachute fun in gym.

And...what fun we had!

Lots of action.

Fun beneath.

Do a dance!

A little time left over for soccer.

Those big climbers have been removed from the long wall of the gym.

On my break, I walked the school halls where I found some fun items on the wall.

Yes, we are an ECO School.

And...we are a bully free zone.

Some lovely artwork.

No need to wash out the names as we don't know which class it is.

Mr. Hamer has to head out for the evening, but he will post more pics from today and tomorrow...tomorrow!  Hehehe!  Thanks for checking in!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Day 133

Friday morning we reviewed our weekly spelling list.

Students took turns coming up to play teacher.

The young teacher would point to a word and then select a peer to read the word and spell it for the class.

Lots of hands went up to read the word.

Everyone enjoyed partaking in the activity.

Of course, everyone wanted a turn being the teacher as well!  Hehehe!

Snack time.

Yes, we are still wearing coats and hats as winter type weather has yet to depart the landscape even though the calendar tells us it is spring.

Students working on a Religion sheet.

It was a "Find the Hidden Picture" around Palm Sunday.

The boys and girls enjoy working with friends away from their regular desk.

They also enjoy having friends visit their desk.

Teamwork abounds.

Friends checking in on the progress of their classmates.

Friends helping friends.

This camaraderie helps to build the notion of the class being a family.

Some of our recent Religion efforts.
Feel free to click on the picture to read the story about Mary.

Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.  Of course Palm Sunday was a few weeks ago, yet it is important to continue to remember the courage and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Learning about "pronouns" within the context of a Bible story we had read earlier in the year.

The students were very interested to learn of the story of the Tower of Babel.

Of course, they learned that God made the people now speak a variety of languages foreign to each other as punishment for building a tower to Heaven.  Only God determines who goes to Heaven.  The term "babble" originated from this story as the builders all babbled among themselves following God's intervention.

We have also been learning about Moses, the young baby who was put in a basket along the River Nile by his mother in order for him to escape certain death at the hands of the king of Egypt.

The "good" irony in this story is that it was the very daughter of the king who found the child floating down the river and rescued him.  She was the one who named him Moses.

While Moses was raised by the king in the palace, he felt very uncomfortable in the way his people were treated as slaves so he ran away and became a shepherd.  The children learned how God appeared to Moses and ensured Moses that God would be with him as he led his people out of Egypt to the land of milk and honey.

Some Tower of Babel work.

The children understand that God is beside them in all that they do every moment of their lives.

While the children were in French class with Mme Pepe, Mr. Hamer took a short walk around the school.

It is fun to share what is on the walls of the hallways in different parts of the school.

Looks like the Kindergarten children certainly understand that we all are shepherds of our environment.

Lovely "thumb painting" of our precious home.

A few more pics from Jersey/Green Day.

We wore the jerseys and this colour in support of the Humboldt hockey club.

Lots of colourful clothes.

Nice support.

Colourful too!

Mr. Hamer wore his Hamilton Tiger Cats jersey.

That once belonged to our former Governor General...David Johnston.

So I asked the boys and girls why they thought he had the number 28 on this jersey and on every other jersey he was presented with as he criss-crossed the country and the world.

Below is a sampling of some of their responses.

"Maybe he was 28 years old when he got the jersey."
"I think he was given the shirt in 1928!"
"No, no, no, I bet he scored 28 goals!" (touchdowns that would be - hehehe)
"It's got to be that 28 is his favourite number, of course."
"The governor general likes even numbers."
"I bet he wore the jersey for 28 days in a row!"
"It's easy.  That's how old he is!"
"I'll guess that his favourite player wore number 28."
"Maybe it's his lucky number."

I then explained to the students that the reason all of the jerseys across so many sports that he received displays the number 28 is because...he was the 28th governor general of Canada.

See you tomorrow in class!  Have a wonderful Sunday evening and take care during the storm.  All the best...Mr. Hamer OCT
